35 Combined Runs Make Up Wild Ten-Inning Defeat for Baseball Against Lightning

WILMINGTON, Del. -- 364 days ago, Post University Baseball did battle against Dominican (N.Y.) in a road nine-inning game that featured 38 combined runs in a 20-18 loss. Fast forward to today, the same sort of game took place, this time between the Eagles and Goldey-Beacom College down in Delaware, as a back-and-forth tilt saw 35 combined runs and five lead changes, culminating in a walk-off wild pitch for the Lightning in the tenth inning, 18-17.

THE BASICS

Post University 17, Goldey-Beacom College 18 (10 Innings)

Post University (25-23, 19-13 CACC)

Goldey-Beacom College (28-20, 21-11 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Between the two sides, 14 pitchers were used with the Eagles throwing five arms to the Lightning's nine, leading to 119 batters faced, 35 runs, 28 walks, 26 hits, 19 strikeouts, and 477 total pitches thrown when all was set and done. Among the most impressive performances was sophomore infielder Rene Vega III, as he reached base safely in all six of his plate appearances via his 1-for-1 game with two RBIs, two runs scored, three walks, and he was hit twice. In one of the stranger statistics that came out of the game, Post left 13 runners stranded overall, with 10 of those coming from senior catcher Manny Contreras' seven at-bats, as he went 1-for-7 with a fifth-inning grand slam that gave the Eagles the lead back at that time, 12-10.

After the Lightning pushed across two runs in the first via a wild pitch and a steal of home, Post answered back with four runs against sophomore left-hander Zach Davis as freshman infielder Ryan Davie started the scoring with an RBI single followed by Vega III's RBI walk, and a two-run single from graduate infielder Andrew Hartman, giving the Eagles their first lead of the day, 4-2. But the first of two big innings for either team came from Goldey-Beacom, who put up a six-spot in the third with the big blow being a grand slam from freshman outfielder Kaden Barmer, who was 4-for-6 with that home run, five RBIs, three runs scored, and a walk.

Trailing 10-4 entering the fifth, 10 runs on five hits for the Eagles, spearheaded by a grand slam from Contreras, gave Post the lead again, 14-10, as all but one of the runs came across the plate with one out in the frame, including two from walks and hit batters. Junior outfielder Joey Cohen capped off the scoring stretch with a two-run double, before sophomore right-hander Cody Klotz retired the next two batters to escape further harm.

Until the eighth, Post continued to hold on to a slim lead, heading into the inning with a three-run lead, 17-14, when junior right-hander Sebastian Velasquez struggled with his control, leading to two hit batters, one of which drove in a run, as well as an RBI walk, and a game-tying wild pitch, that suddenly tied the game at 17 all. Velasquez would finish 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits with five strikeouts, three walks, two hit batters, and a wild pitch.

With the bases loaded and only one out in the ninth, the Eagles looked to regain the lead, but were unable to do so against senior right-hander Kory Williams, as he came back to strike out Hartman and Contreras to end the frame, while Velasquez forced extra innings after getting back-to-back strikeouts with a runner on third and one out in the bottom half of the inning. Junior infielder Bobby Stewart led off the bottom of the tenth with a double off junior right-hander Dalton Wright, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore outfielder Roman Keith for the first out after Wright issued a walk.

With sophomore infielder Jake Macey at the plate, Wright would throw a wild pitch, scoring the walk-off run for Goldey-Beacom, who took two of the three games from the Eagles this weekend with the 18-17 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Evan Cornwell finished today's game with two hits, moving his career total to 185 hits –  Cornwell is six hits away from tying Dan Luisi for the most hits in program history at Post University
  • Rene Vega III was the only player from either team to reach base safely in every single one of his at-bats, going 1-for-1 with three walks and two hit by pitches in his six at-bats
  • The 35 combined runs between Post University and Goldey-Beacom College were the most runs the Eagles have had in a game since they fell 20-18 to Dominican (N.Y.) last season on April 27th, 2025, on the road in game one of their doubleheader, as those two teams combined for 38 runs
  • Between the two teams, 119 batters came to the plate, producing 35 runs, 28 walks, 26 hits, and 19 strikeouts, while throwing a total of 477 pitches
