WILMINGTON, Del. – Playing in a pair of make-up games from over the weekend, Post University Softball could not find a way to get past Wilmington University for the first time since the 2022 season, dropping a pair of games to the Wildcats, 3-0 and 9-1, in Thursday afternoon's road matchup.
As it stands, the Eagles are 6-8 in conference play in seventh place, sitting three games back in the loss column to catch the University of Bridgeport or Holy Family University in third and fourth place, while being four back of Felician University, which they play next week, with four games remaining in the regular season.
Post has not locked up a CACC Tournament spot yet, as Dominican (N.Y.), who they own the tiebreaker against, still has six conference games left, trailing the Eagles by just three games in the loss column.
THE BASICS
Post University 0, Wilmington University 3
Post University 1, Wilmington University 9 (5 Innings)
Post University (9-28, 6-8 CACC)
Wilmington University (18-24, 8-6 CACC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Post University 0, Wilmington University 3
Three runs in the first inning would be all the Wildcats needed to take game one, as a seven-inning shutout by sophomore right-hander Olivia Hitchens saw her allow just four hits, while striking out ten and walking three on 109 pitches to move to 9-5 in the circle this year.
As for graduate right-hander
Katelyn Lipsky, she would settle down after the three-run first, allowing no more runs in her six innings of work that saw her give up seven hits, strike out two, walk one, and hit a batter. Sophomore outfielder Maddie Vollmar doubled in two runs with nobody out in the first, while freshman infielder Mia Lane, who was the first out of the frame for the Wildcats, knocked in another with her sacrifice fly, giving Wilmington the run support they needed for Hitchens.
The best scoring chance that the Eagles would have against Hitchens came in the fifth inning when they loaded the bases against her with only one out via two singles and a walk. Hitchens would come back to get sophomore outfielder
Hannah Searles to pop out on the infield, followed by a strikeout for sophomore infielder
Alexandra Bisceglia to end the threat.
Hitchens would go on to get six of the last seven Post batters out to earn the shutout win, minus a one-out triple in the seventh inning by junior utility player
Allysa Calabrese.
Game 2: Post University 1, Wilmington University 9 (5 Innings)
Against sophomore right-hander
Meghan McGurk, the Wilmington offense pounded out nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits across 4 1/3 innings to force the eight-run mercy rule in the fifth, while the sophomore struck out four and walked one in the ninth consecutive loss in the all-time series for Post.
Graduate infielder
Nyla Sapia had the lone extra-base hit for the Eagles, a double in the fourth off of sophomore right-hander Kasey Xenidis, which led to the only run of the day for Post via freshman utility player
Tatiana Martinez's ground out. Three different Wildcats finished with 2-for-3 games in Vollmar, junior infielder Angelina Edwards and senior infielder Cassidy Zelano, while freshman utility player Mia Keenan closed with a two-RBI game.
Earning her second win of the season, Xenidis pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit with four strikeouts, a walk, and a wild pitch. She replaced sophomore right-hander Karen Sickle, who started the game for Wilmington, allowing no runs on two hits across 2 2/3 innings of work with three strikeouts, three walks, and a wild pitch.
