Offense Slow Down by Bridgeport Pitching, Baseball Swept by Purple Knights

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Clinching a spot in the CACC Tournament will have to wait a little longer for Post University Baseball, as the Eagle offense, which had scored ten-plus runs in four of their last five games, was held to just two runs across their doubleheader against the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday. After being shut out in game one, 7-0, Post dropped game two by a 3-2 decision, ending their five-game winning streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 0, University of Bridgeport 7
Despite only allowing three hits in the game, the Eagles would allow seven runs because of a pair of errors between the third and fourth innings, in which the Purple Knights manufactured six total runs to open up a 6-0 edge with junior right-hander Sebastian Velasquez on the mound.

After walking back-to-back batters to start the third, an error on senior shortstop Liam O'Neal's sacrifice bunt led to the first run of the game, before freshman infielder Vincenzo Della Porta had an RBI groundout for the first out of the inning. Junior outfielder Patrick Krempasky ended the scoring with an RBI infield single before the trio of runs that came in during the fourth.

Velasquez would allow a bases-loaded walk to O'Neal, before another fielding error, this time in Della Porta's at-bat, brought in another run from the Purple Knights. Krempasky led the offensive attack with a 2-for-3 performance, driving in three runs, while Della Porta was 0-for-3 with two RBIs at a walk in the shutout win.

On the mound, freshman right-hander Christian Walsh went the distance for Bridgeport, allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts, two walks, and a hit batter. Junior right-hander Dalton Wright had the best outing of the trio of Eagles who pitched, throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings in the loss.

Game 2: Post University 2, University of Bridgeport 3 (7 Innings)
While the Post offense would get on the board first, their scoring would be matched by Bridgeport twice over before the Purple Knights took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. Graduate infielder Hunter Keller drove in the first of two runs for the Eagles with his first-inning RBI single, while Krempasky matched that in the bottom of the frame with an RBI triple.

Getting the start behind the dish in game two. junior infielder Alberto Cantalini knocked in a run in the second, as Post regained the lead once more, 2-1, which they would hold on to until the fifth. That was when junior right-hander Zion Fraser walked the first batter of the inning, leading to the end of his day in favor of freshman right-hander Andrew Hardin. Hardin would retire the next two hitters before Della Porta delivered the go-ahead triple with two outs, giving the Purple Knights the one-run lead, 3-2.

Senior right-hander Brendan Palmer would get credited with the win, throwing the final three innings of the affair, allowing no runs or hits to go along with one hit and one strikeout.
