HOW IT HAPPENED
Moving the game up to today to avoid the anticipated rain in the forecast for Friday, it was all Eagles from the jump as they put up 12 unanswered runs through the first two innings, which included a ten-run second inning against freshman pitchers Jackson Cooper and Akhil Penkala.
Cooper would last only one inning after hitting four total batters and exiting in the second with the bases loaded in what was a 5-0 game at the time. With Penkala on the mound, all three runs would come in via freshman catcher Evangelos Spyrogiannis' passed ball and a two-run single from Hartman, who was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.
That would close the line on Cooper's day as he allowed eight runs on four hits with four hit batters, one strikeout, and one walk, falling to 1-1 on the season. Both Hartman and junior outfielder
Kevan Diaz finished with three RBIs, as Diaz cleared the bases with his double in the second, while Hartman had two singles and a triple that led to his three total RBIs.
Freshman right-hander
Justin Hascup threw four innings in his start for the Eagles, allowing four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts, taking a no-decision in the game, as he was relieved by senior right-hander
Harby Valera in the fifth. In the process, the Lions would make a push after allowing those 12 unanswered runs, scoring seven consecutive runs of their own from the third to the seventh inning, making it just a five-run game.
With Hascup on the mound, Georgian Court's first four runs came via RBI singles from senior infielders Frank Mara and Arian Lunar, while sophomore infielder Matt DiOttavio doubled in another run, and sophomore catcher Kody Lewis scored another on a groundout.
Plating three more runs in the seventh off of Valera, contributions via a two-run double from junior outfielder Brian Guzman and an RBI single from senior first baseman Zinny Kemahu, which turned the once 12-run lead into just a five-run edge heading into the bottom of the frame, 12-7.
However, Valera would come back in the eighth, getting out of a two-out jam with runners on first and second, while freshman infielder
Ryan Davie extended the lead in the bottom of the inning with his pinch-hit, RBI single. Junior right-hander
Dalton Wright would finish off the Lions in the ninth with a 1-2-3 appearance as the Eagles took their fifth consecutive game against the Lions since their program started last spring, 13-7, at home.
