WATERBURY, Conn. – Although the outcome was the same as the start of the 2025 season against Southern Connecticut State University at home on LaMoy Field for Post University Softball, the way the affairs played out was vastly different as the Eagles repeatedly answered the call in their comeback attempts against the Owls, falling just short in an 11-5 and 7-5 effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Post University 5, Southern Connecticut State University 11
It was all Owls early on in the affair as they jumped on graduate right-hander
Katelyn Lipsky for five runs over the course of her four innings of action. Lipsky finished her start, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with four walks, a strikeout, and a wild pitch as she dueled with senior right-hander Ashley Lewis in the circle.
Lewis' start would see her last five innings in her first win of the season, in which she allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits with five strikeouts and a walk. En route to that 5-1 lead, junior outfielder Peyten Filippone had an RBI walk, while junior utility player Olivia Young and graduate infielder Gianna Iaquinto each had RBI singles, along with sophomore infielder Izzy Ingersoll's RBI triple.
In the midst of that five-run blitz, Post got one back from sophomore infielder
Angelica Tompkins, who started the season off with a 3-for-3 game, which fell just a home run short of the cycle and included her second-inning RBI triple. Two errors from the Owls helped the Eagles drive across two runs in the fifth before Lewis was lifted for sophomore right-hander Kate Nickerson in the sixth.
Still trailing by two, 5-3, the seventh inning would see the Owls push across six runs against junior left-hander
Devin Barnett and sophomore right-hander
Meghan McGurk, only one of which would be earned due to an error by Post with one out in the inning by Tompkins. Doubles by both sophomore infielder
Alexandra Bisceglia and sophomore outfielder
Hannah Searles cut into the deficit against Nickerson, making it a six-run game before Nickerson would close the door on her save opportunity, 11-5, after coming into the sixth in a two-run game.
Game 2: Post University 5, Southern Connecticut State University 7
Southern Connecticut would once again jump out to an early lead, scoring seven unanswered runs from the third to fifth innings against freshman right-hander
Bailey Ruel, followed by junior right-hander
Allysa Calabrese, who relieved her after three innings. Ruel's first collegiate start saw her allow one run on one hit with three walks and a wild pitch before Calabrese gave up six runs (four earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
In the circle for the Owls was sophomore right-hander Giselle DeLutri, who narrowly broke her single-game strikeout record of 15, striking out 13 Eagles across her five innings of work, allowing five runs on six hits with two walks. Two of the seven runs to start the game for Southern Connecticut were the result of errors by the Eagles, while sophomore outfielder Cheyenne LaTouche's two-run triple, an RBI double by sophomore catcher Sophia Angiolini, and an RBI single from Inquinto accounted for the rest.
However, Post would not go down quietly, responding with five unanswered runs against DeLutri as Searles doubled in two runs in the second to cut into the deficit, before three runs in the sixth came from Tompkins and freshman utility player
Tatiana Martinez to make it 7-5 heading into the seventh. Sophomore outfielder
Isabella Oliver led off that frame with a triple before Lewis came back into the game, retiring the next three batters she faced on seven pitches to shut the door on the 7-5 win and sweep for the Owls.
