Baseball Swept in Three-Game Weekend Series by Jefferson

WATERBURY, Conn. –  Graduate outfielder Andrew Hartman extended his on-base streak to 20 consecutive games for Post University Baseball on Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium, but the Eagles were unable to contain the Jefferson bats, allowing 24 runs across the doubleheader, falling 12-8 and 12-7, getting swept in the three-game weekend tilt with the Rams.

THE BASICS

Post University (13-17, 7-7 CACC)

Jefferson University (10-11, 9-5 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 8, Jefferson University 12
Scoring eight of the first nine runs in the contest, the Rams took the lead and never looked back, leading 8-1 after just four innings of action. Freshman outfielder Vincent Favata drove in two runs, one via a throwing error by junior right-hander Sebastian Velaquez, who got the start in game one, and the second on a sacrifice fly in the third.

Favata finished the game 0-for-3, but with two RBIs via his two sacrifice flies, as only six of the 12 runs scored by Jefferson resulted in runs batted in for them. Senior outfielder Aleksei Goldhill finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Rams, as the Post defense struggled, committing five errors, which led to six unearned runs for Eagle pitchers.

As for Velazquez, he finished his start allowing six runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts, two walks, a hit batter, and a wild pitch, getting handed his first loss of the season on the mound. Senior pitcher Saiben Rivera moved to 2-1 for Jefferson after going seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts, a walk, and a wild pitch on 116 pitches.

Post would scrape across a pair of runs in the ninth, trailing 12-6, as graduate infielder Hunter Keller drove in a run on a sacrifice fly before graduate shortstop Evan Cornwell tallied an RBI single in the 12-8 loss.

Game 2: Post University 7, Jefferson University 12 (7 Innings)
Four consecutive runs for the Eagles to start game two would give them a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning against sophomore pitcher Kevin Baez, as junior outfielder Joey Cohen doubled home a run followed by a two-run single via an error in right field by Favata spurred on the rally, but it would be met with seven consecutive runs by the Rams over the next two innings.

Getting all four runs back against junior right-hander Zion Fraser, Jefferson regained control of the contest with three RBI singles and a throwing error by Contreras, all in the second. Three more runs would come across in the third as sophomore catcher Julio Frometa Gomez doubled in a run and junior outfielder Tristan Capers plated a couple as well, evaporating the four-run lead completely for the Eagles, resulting in a three-run edge for Jefferson, 7-4.

In all, 12 consecutive runs came across the plate for the Rams into the sixth inning before freshman infielder Ryan Davie's RBI single and an RBI walk issued to Cohen made it a five-run game, 12-7, with the bases loaded in the sixth and still one out. Freshman pitcher Chase Ceppo would proceed to get Hartman and Contreras out, quelling the threat as Ceppo shut down Post in the seventh to secure the doubleheader sweep with the 12-7 win.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Tristan Capers finished the doubleheader 3-for-10 with five RBIs, two runs scored, and two stolen bases in the sweep for Jefferson University
