WATERBURY, Conn. – Graduate catcher
Sydney Jones hit her first collegiate home run in game one of Post University Softball's doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon against AIC at home, as part of her two home run day as the Eagles snapped their four-game losing streak with a 4-1 win in game one before falling in game two to the Yellow Jackets, 16-7.
THE BASICS
Post University 4, AIC 1
Post University 7, AIC 16 (5 Innings)
Post University (2-15)
AIC (4-12)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Post University 4, AIC 1
After allowing 23 stolen bases in yesterday's road doubleheader against Assumption, Jones had a big day at the plate and behind the plate, throwing out a runner in the sixth, for the Eagles in their second win of the season. Jones tied the game in the second at one all with her first home run of the year after freshman utility player Macey Burns gave the Yellow Jackets the lead in the top of the frame.
But graduate right-hander
Katelyn Lipsky would dominate in the circle for Post outside of that one run allowed, giving up just three hits with six strikeouts and a walk, finishing the seven-inning affair on only 71 pitches. Tied at one in the fifth, that would be where the Eagles broke away to snap their four-game losing streak with a three-run inning.
With the bases loaded and nobody out, sophomore outfielder
Hannah Searles gave Post the lead, 2-1, with her sacrifice fly, before sophomore first baseman
Alexandra Bisceglia brought in two more with her double off sophomore pitcher Trinity LaValley. As for senior pitcher Julia Krijgsman, she would take the loss for AIC, falling to 0-7 on the year after allowing four runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.
In both the sixth and seventh innings, Lipsky faced the minimum for Post en route to her second win on the mound this season in the 4-1 win.
Game 2: Post University 7, AIC 16 (5 Innings)
A 10-run third inning would be all the Yellow Jackets needed to run away with game two and earn themselves a split with the Eagles after taking a 3-0 lead after 1 1/2 innings of play. Post would come back with two runs in the bottom of the second, making it a 3-2 game behind graduate third baseman
Nyla Sapia scoring on a wild pitch and Searles driving in a run off of sophomore pitcher Gabrielle Lambert.
However, 13 batters would come to the plate in the third for AIC, who produced 10 runs on seven hits, including a big three-run blast from junior infielder Mikayla Doucette off of freshman right-hander
Bailey Ruel. Post would have three different players on the mound in the frame as sophomore right-hander
Meghan McGurk started the inning before being lifted for junior left-hander
Devin Barnett. Barnett would allow seven runs on four hits with three walks and one strikeout, while Ruel was charged with five runs (four earned) on five hits with a wild pitch and a hit batter.
Three different players for the Yellow Jackets would record three hits in Burns, junior outfielder Lauryn Ramalho, and sophomore infielder Brianna Salazar combined to go 9-for-14 with three RBIs. Sophomore infielder Nevaeh Trejo led the AIC offense with four RBIs, going 2-for-3 with one run scored, while Doucette was a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBIs, three runs scored, and a walk.
On the Post side, Sapia and junior utility player
Allysa Calabrese each had two-hit games, while Jones clobbered her second home run of the afternoon in the fifth inning, a two-run shot, in her 1-for-1 performance with two RBIs, two walks, and three runs scored in the 16-7 defeat.
