Softball Splits on Senior Day Behind Sydney Jones Sixth-Inning Homer in Game Two

WATERBURY, Conn. – It was a tale of two games for Post University Softball as the Eagles overcame a 12-1 loss in five innings to Goldey-Beacom College at LaMoy Field on Sunday in game one, to take game two, 5-3, snapping a seven-game losing streak against the Lightning after graduate catcher Sydney Jones hit her third home run of the week, a solo shot, in the sixth inning to give the Eagles the lead for good.

THE BASICS

Post University 1, Goldey-Beacom College 12 (5 Innings)

Post University 5, Goldey-Beacom College 3

Post University (3-16, 1-1 CACC)

Goldey-Beacom College (11-11, 3-3 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 1, Goldey-Beacom College 12 (5 Innings)
Junior left-hander Devin Barnett started on her Senior Day, lasting only 2 1/3 innings against the Lightning, who tagged her for six runs (five earned) on seven hits with three walks. Four runs would cross the plate for Goldey-Beacom in the first, as a two-run double by senior infielder Autumn Simpson and an RBI double from freshman infielder Bella Musey highlighted the 4-0 lead.

The runs would keep coming in for the Lightning in the third, with two more coming across in the third on freshman outfielder Ayri Hansen's RBI single and junior utility player McKenna Frank's RBI hit by pitch. Frank led the Goldey-Beacom offense with a 2-for-3 game, hitting two doubles with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Simpson also helped lead the offensive charge with a 1-for-3 showing, doubling in a pair of runs as part of her three-RBI game in which she walked and scored once. Graduate infielder Nyla Sapia broke up the 12-0 stretch by the Lightning with her first home run of the season, a solo home shot, in the 12-1 loss.

Junior pitcher Molly Skelly moved to 5-2 in the circle this year for the Lightning, allowing no runs on four hits with a strikeout in four innings of work.

Game 2: Post University 5, Goldey-Beacom College 3
After graduate right-hander Katelyn Lipsky allowed an RBI single to freshman infielder Kelci Gingras in the first inning, the Post offense would come alive in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs against freshman pitcher Madison Ore to take a 3-1 lead. It started with a two-run home run by freshman infielder Haley DiBona as the Eagles loaded the bases against Ore, who allowed a bases-loaded walk to Sapia before escaping the inning having allowed just three runs.

Ore's offense would rally behind her, chipping away at the two-run deficit over the next few innings as sophomore catcher Bri Cole cut into the Post lead with an RBI double in the third before Simpson tied it in the fifth with a two-out RBI single against Lipsky. After Ore spun her fourth consecutive scoreless inning, the sixth would be where Jones broke through with her first-pitch home run to left field, giving the Eagles the lead back for good.

Sophomore first baseman Alexandra Bisceglia helped add some insurance to that one-run lead with an RBI single off sophomore pitcher Lauren Carbonara, who came on in relief of Ore, before Lipsky had a 1-2-3 seventh inning to secure the 5-3 win. Lipsky's final line would see her allow three runs on nine hits with three walks, two strikeouts, and a wild pitch to move to 3-4 on the year.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Angelica Tompkins finished game two, going 3-for-3 with three singles to raise her batting average back up to .429 for the season after she was 0-for-2 in game one
  • This week alone, Sydney Jones finished with three home runs, including the game-winner in game two today, after entering the season with zero home runs in her collegiate career
  • Katelyn Lipsky capped off a dominant week in the circle for Post University, in which she allowed just four runs on 12 hits in two complete-game wins
  • The win against Goldey-Beacom College snaps a seven-game losing streak for Post University in the all-time series, five of which had come by way of the mercy rule in five innings

WHO'S NEXT
Post University finishes up its homestand tomorrow afternoon against Chestnut Hill College at 2:30 PM. The Eagles were swept for the first time in program history against the Griffins last season and have lost three consecutive games to them overall.
