Greene Nets Two in Season-Opening Loss for Women's Lacrosse at Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior attacker Claire Greene had two goals for Post University Women's Lacrosse in its 2026 opener on the road against Holy Family University on Saturday morning as the Eagles dropped their first conference game of the season, 17-7, to the Tigers, behind five goals from sophomore attacker Gwen Varley.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Varley got the Tigers on the board first with 11:48 remaining in the first and they would never look back, scoring the first five goals before senior defender Paige Pipher scored with 2:31 left for the first Post goal of the 2026 season, making it a 5-1 game, in a battle of freshman goalies between Haydee Guzman for the Tigers and Katheryn Sousa for Post. Guzman would best Sousa, making 11 saves on 18 attempts for the Tigers, while Sousa stopped six shots out of a possible 23 in the loss.

The closest the Eagles would get the remainder of the way was within five goals at the 12:36 mark of the second when Greene scored an unassisted goal to make it a 7-2 game. Holy Family would proceed to go on a 4-0 run to take a nine-goal lead, eventually leading by eight heading into the second half, 11-3, en route to the 17-7 win. 

Freshman midfielder Peyton Tully had a team-best three points with her two goals and one assist, while graduate midfielder Alyssa Hebb scored twice as well in the defeat. Hebb also won a team-best four draw controls as the Eagles won 14 of the 27 draw controls as a team, while causing 14 turnovers and limiting their caused turnovers to just 11 in the affair.

As for the Tigers, they were led by Varley's five goals, followed by four from junior attacker Taina Harkins, who had four goals and two assists for a total of six points. Their defense was led by sophomore defender Elle Fitzgerald's four caused turnovers and six ground balls, while offensively, eight different players scored for Holy Family in the win.

  • Peyton Tully finished with a team-best three points, scoring two goals and adding an assist in the loss
  • Making her first collegiate start in net for Post University, Katheryn Sousa made six saves, taking the loss between the pipes
  • Gwen Varley led all players with five goals for Holy Family University, while Taina Harkins led them with six total points via his four goals and two assists
  • Post University has lost five consecutive games in the all-time series against Holy Family University, dating back to the 2022 season, and has been held to less than 10 goals in each of the last two affairs 

WHO'S NEXT
Post University looks to avenge its narrow 12-10 loss at home last season against St. Thomas Aquinas College next Wednesday at 1:00 PM as they head on the road to face the Spartans. The Eagles are 2-4 in the all-time series against St. Thomas Aquinas College since it began during the 2019 season.
