Softball Earns First Win of 2026 Against Molloy Behind Lipsky Gem in Wednesday Split

VIERA, Fla. – While it was a pair of five-inning games for Post University Softball on Wednesday down in Florida, one of them would end in the tenth consecutive defeat to start the year, before the next would see the Eagles snap that 10-game losing streak, earning their first victory of the 2026 season. After falling to Lewis University in mercy rule fashion, 13-2, Post came back in a big way with their biggest offensive performance since March 22nd, 2024, when they scored 11 runs at home against AIC, taking down Molloy University, 11-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 2, Lewis University 13 (5 Innings)
Although the outcome was lopsided, the first inning saw the two teams exchange a run as junior utility player Allysa Calabrese's RBI single tied the game at one all after senior catcher Kristen Graham gave the Flyers the lead against freshman right-hander Baily Ruel. Ruel would end up lasting only two full innings, and one batter in the third before sophomore right-hander Meghan McGurk entered the day, closing her line at seven runs on eight hits for her second loss of the season in the circle.

As for McGurk, she pitched the final three innings, giving up six runs on four hits with three strikeouts, three consecutive walks in the fourth, and a wild pitch. With all that run support, junior right-hander Chloe Gust coasted to her third win of the year, pitching all five innings while allowing two runs on three hits with three walks.

Junior utility player Chloe Kohnhorst finished with a team-high three RBIs, clearing the bases in the fourth inning for the Flyers before scoring on a wild pitch to get Lewis in mercy rule territory, at which point Gust closed the door on the final two innings. The only other run allowed by Gust came on a passed ball issued to sophomore catcher Morgan Spodarek in the third. Spodarek finished a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored for the Flyers.

Game 2: Post University 11, Molloy University 1 (5 Innings)
Graduate right-hander Katelyn Lipsky turned in her best start as an Eagle to lead them to their first win of the season and first mercy rule win in five innings since the 2024 season, when they ended the year with a 9-1 win against Dominican (N.Y.) at home. Sophomore catcher Gwen Woodsit gave the Lions the lead, 1-0, with a first-inning RBI single before Lipsky found her groove the rest of the game, pitching five innings and allowing only that run on four hits with six strikeouts and a wild pitch.

Graduate third baseman Nyla Sapia started a five-run second inning with her RBI single, which was continued a few batters later with RBI singles from sophomore outfielder Hannah Searles and sophomore infielder Alexandra Bisceglia. Sophomore infielder Angelica Tompkins closed out the frame with her two-run triple, as she continues to lead the team in batting average, reaching the .438 mark after going 3-for-7 overall today.

Joining the scoring party in the third was graduate catcher Sydney Jones with a two-run double during her three-RBI game as she walked in a run during the fourth inning, with Post pushing closer to the mercy rule mark. That would come in the fifth as three more runs were plated for the Eagles via Bisceglia's second single and a two-run triple by Sapia, leading Post to an 11-1 win on a day where the fielding had no errors for only the second game this season.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Continuing her tear at the plate to start the season, Angelica Tompkins finished 3-for-7 with a triple, two RBIs, and three runs scored, raising her season batting average to .438 -- Tompkins ranks third among eligible hitters in the conference for highest batting average and third for a single-season in the history of the program
  • Katelyn Lipsky had her best performance in the circle as a member of Post University, allowing only one run on four hits with six strikeouts, one walk, and a wild pitch to earn her first win of the season
  • Wednesday's early game matchup against Lewis University marked the first time since the 2019 season in which the teams have faced off against each other in which the Flyers came out on top 4-2
  • The mercy rule win for Post University is its first since the 2024 season, when they defeated Dominican (N.Y.) in five innings to end the year with a 9-1 victory
WHO'S NEXT
