HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Post University 4, Purdue University Northwest 10
Sophomore right-hander
Meghan McGurk got the start in the circle for the Eagles, allowing five runs in the first inning before settling down in the second. McGurk would end up only lasting 2 1/3 innings as she allowed nine runs on 11 hits with four walks and two wild pitches, falling to 0-2 on the year. In relief of her, freshman right-hander
Bailey Ruel continued the strong start to her freshman campaign, allowing only one run on two hits with a hit batter over the final 3 2/3 innings.
Three doubles and a single paced the way to that early five-run lead for the Lions, but Post would respond with four in the third inning to cut their deficit down to one for a brief moment. Sophomore outfielder
Isabella Oliver worked a four-pitch walk, and an error on sophomore outfielder
Hannah Searles' single led to her crossing the plate for the first run of the inning for the Eagles.
Freshman infielder
Haley DiBona drove in Searles, while graduate third baseman
Nyla Sapia recorded a two-run ground-rule double that made it a one-run game, 5-4, against junior right-hander Hannah Rafferty-Flatter. But the Purdue Northwest bats came alive again as a pair of singles from sophomore utility player Kylie Madura and senior infielder Amanda DeBoer around an RBI walk helped grow the lead back to five runs, 9-4, with a matching four-run frame.
Tompkins finished a team-best 3-for-4 in the game, while DiBona was the only other multi-hit player with two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Rafferty-Flatter moved to 1-0 on the year, throwing all seven innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts, a walk, a hit batter, and a wild pitch.
Game 2: Post University 1, Minot State University 9 (6 Innings)
From the jump, the Beavers took control of the affair against junior right-hander
Allysa Calabrese, as senior infielder Paige Kellogg had an RBI double in the first inning to start a stretch with four consecutive runs from Minot State. Kellogg would end up helping the Beavers earn the mercy rule with a grand slam off of junior left-hander
Devin Barnett in the sixth inning, finishing the game 2-for-4 with that home run, the double, five RBIs, and a run scored.
Calabrese and Barnett combined to allow nine runs on 12 hits with three walks and one strikeout, including three home runs in the 9-1 loss. Freshman outfielder Lanae Kimbley had a two-run home run in the third, while freshman outfielder Jorja Franzwa had a solo shot in the fifth on the win. Tompkins recorded the only run of the game for Post with her RBI fielder's choice despite an 0-for-3 game.
A trio of pitchers saw the mound for the Beavers, as senior right-hander Kierra Fournier pitched a scoreless first two innings with four strikeouts and two hits allowed before senior right-hander Calley Olson entered the game. Olson would pick up the win after throwing three innings, allowing one run on three hits with two walks. Freshman left-hander Addie Marcus closed out the sixth with a scoreless frame in which she allowed two hits.
