HOW IT HAPPENED
Freshman right-hander
Jacob Schrage allowed two first-inning runs to the Cougars, as a pair of walks gave the home team a 2-0 lead after one, marking the third time this season in which Caldwell has scored first in the game. Their edge would be short-lived as graduate shortstop
Evan Cornwell tripled home junior infielder
Jesse Alfalla, followed by freshman infielder
Max DeFrancesco's RBI single to tie the game up at two all in the second.
Freshman right-hander Shawn Fraumeni would end up surrendering four runs on four hits over the course of four innings for Caldwell, while striking out four, walking three, and throwing two wild pitches. After his exit, the Cougars led by one, 4-3, as Schrage had also been chased from the game after just 1 2/3 innings of work. Junior right-hander Sebastian Velazquez came in to relieve Schrage, earning his second win of the season after allowing just one unearned run on a hit with three strikeouts, two walks, and two wild pitches.
The big blow of the game came in the fifth inning for the Eagles as they came away with nine runs as part of a stretch in which they scored 13 unanswered runs to take control of the affair, 16-6. Senior catcher
Manny Contreras continued to rake against the Cougars, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored, starting the scoring run with his game-tying RBI single, which was followed up with a go-ahead two-run single from Alfalla.
In the 10-run, seven-inning victory, four players for the Eagles recorded multi-hit games, led by sophomore infielder
Gill Dolan and Contreras with three hits each, followed by both Cornwell and DeFrancesco with two. Cornwell had a double and a triple in the win, as he was one of six Post players to finish with two or more RBIs. Senior right-hander Ben Foote was charged with the loss for Caldwell, as he was unable to record an out in the fifth inning, allowing five runs on four hits with a hit batter.
