VIERA, Fla. – Although rain would cancel game two of the afternoon for Post University Softball on its spring trip to Viera, Florida, the Eagles would take the field earlier in the day against Northern State University for the first time in 10 years, falling 9-1 in five innings to the Wolves, and dropping to 0-7 overall on the year.
THE BASICS
Post University 1, Northern State University 9 (5 Innings)
Post University (0-7)
Northern State University (8-6)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior infielder Madi Jones started the scoring for the Wolves with a first-inning sacrifice fly, while sophomore utility player Corina Coppersmith extended the lead in the third inning with her two-run single, making it a three-run game against junior left-hander
Devin Barnett on the mound. Barnett ended up taking her second loss of the season, lasting two innings in which she allowed four runs on two hits with five walks.
In relief of her, freshman right-hander
Bailey Ruel took the mound for the final 1 1/3 innings before Northern State would get into mercy rule territory after tagging her for five runs (four earned) on eight hits, pushing the lead to eight runs in the fifth inning to end the affair. Freshman infielder Alicia Jeanson singled home the game-clinching run as Post briefly staved off the game ending in the top of the fifth with an RBI walk for graduate infielder
Nyla Sapia.
Freshman right-hander Riley O'Connell threw four shutout innings to earn her second win of the season, striking out three Eagles while allowing two hits, walking four, and hitting one. Sophomore right-hander Aune Boben allowed the only run of the day for the Wolves before sophomore right-hander Dessa Bryant finished off the game with a scoreless inning of work.
