Manny Being Manny! Contreras Homers Twice in Baseball's Sweep of Caldwell

WAPPINGER FALLS, N.Y. -- Senior catcher Manny Contreras fell a double short of the cycle in game one, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, a triple, a single, three RBIs, and four runs scored for Post University Baseball, while graduate outfielder Andrew Hartman recorded six RBIs in game two as the Eagles made it 15 consecutive wins against Caldwell University on Wednesday. The 12-5 and 12-3 victories took place at Heritage Financial Park in Wappinger Falls, New York, after field conditions at Municipal Stadium forced the games to be moved.

THE BASICS

Post University (8-10, 2-0 CACC)

Caldwell University (1-6, 0-2 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither of the games started the way Post would have liked them to, as they fell behind 5-0 after three innings in game one and 3-0 after a half an inning in game two before the offense powered its way back into the affairs. Graduate shortstop Evan Cornwell got the offense going with a three-RBI triple in the fourth for the first runs of the afternoon by the Eagles, which cut into that 5-0 deficit and led to 12 unanswered runs from then on.

Sophomore outfielder Jayren Foster, who was 2-for-4 in game one with two doubles, had the game-tying hit in the sixth before junior outfielder Joey Cohen gave the Eagles their first lead, 6-5, with an RBI single of his own. The rest of the way it would be the Contreras show as he hit home runs in back-to-back innings to extend the Post lead to six runs, 11-5, finishing off his 4-for-5 game, while Cornwell closed out the scoring with an RBI triple.

Combined between the two games, Cornwell and Contreras were 10-for-14 overall with three triples, two home runs, eight RBIs, 10 runs scored, two walks, and a stolen base. Hartman, who made his mark in game two with six RBIs, had a triple of his own to make the trio account for 14 of the 23 runs batted in that were credited to the Eagles in their sweep.

Following that 12-5 win in game one, Hartman started the scoring in game two with Post down by three with his RBI single, which once again was the start of an unanswered stretch of runs to the tune of 12 again en route to the 12-3 victory. Beyond Hartman's performance, junior infielder Jesse Alfalla had two hits with two RBIs as the story of that game became Post's pitching.

After the rough first inning for junior right-hander Sebastian Velazquez, he would settle down to throw four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with four strikeouts, three walks, and three wild pitches. A trio of arms for Post in freshman right-handers Andrew Hardin and Eddie Torres, along with freshman left-hander Andrew Hardin, shut down the final three innings of the win with no hits allowed to go along with two walks and two strikeouts combined.

Junior right-hander Dalton Wright picked up the win in game one after coming out of the bullpen to throw 4 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three batters.
