Women's Ice Hockey Falls in Overtime Again, 1-0, to Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Senior goalie Hannah Saunders made 26 saves for Post University Women's Ice Hockey, but for the second straight day, the Eagles would fall in overtime behind the game-winner from sophomore forward Hailey Jussila just 1:33 into the 3-on-3 session, leading Sacred Heart University to the weekend sweep of Post with a 1-0 win on Saturday in Fairfield, Connecticut.

THE BASICS

Post University 0, Sacred Heart University 1 (OT)

Post University (9-20-1, 9-14-1 NEWHA)

Sacred Heart University (11-17-2, 10-12-2 NEWHA)

HOW IT HAPPENED
For three periods, neither side would be able to get the upper hand on the other as Saunders and senior goalie Jillian Petruno went head-to-head between the pipes for the second consecutive game. For the first two periods, the offense would heavily favor Post, firing off 26 shots on Petruno, all of which she stopped, while Saunders had to face just 11 shots in the same span, keeping the Pioneers off the scoreboard.

Through three regulation periods, both teams had four power play chances, including three in the second period alone for Sacred Heart, but between both teams, the Eagles had just three shots on the man-up advantage. For the Pioneers, their four power plays led to five shots, as well as one for Post along the way, but it would yet again take overtime to decide a winner.

Like yesterday, all it took was one overtime shot from either side to end the affair, as Jussila scored her second goal of the weekend, with the help of sophomore defenseman Julai Zielinska, to knot the season series with the Eagles at two wins apiece behind the 1-0 victory. While Sacred Heart has now won six consecutive games, Post has trended in the opposite direction, with four consecutive losses, and only four games left in the regular season.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Jillian Petruno finished with her second shutout win of the season, making all 32 saves against Post University on Saturday
  • Hailey Jussila finishes the weekend with two goals, including the game-winning goal on Saturday afternoon
  • On the weekend, Post University finished 7-for-7 on the penalty kill, while going 1-for-8 on the power play against Sacred Heart University
  • In overtime games, Post University is now 0-2-1 all-time against Sacred Heart University in the three games they have had reach the extra session

WHO'S NEXT
With only four games left in the regular season, Post University will host a pair of home games next weekend against Stonehill College at 7:45 PM on Friday for Senior Day and 2:15 PM on Saturday. The Eagles split the two road games against the Skyhawks earlier this season, winning 3-2 before losing the next day, 3-0.
