Women's Ice Hockey Drops Senior Day Showdown with Stonehill in Overtime

SHELTON, Conn. – Senior forward Maddison Achtyl scored with 4:31 left in regulation for Stonehill College as the Skyhawks forced overtime against Post University Women's Ice Hockey on Senior Night for the Eagles, where Achtyl would net the game-winning goal with 2:15 left, giving the visitors a 2-1 road win on Friday evening.

THE BASICS

Post University 1, Stonehill College 2 (OT)

Post University (9-21-1, 9-15-1 NEWHA)

Stonehill College (14-15-2, 14-9-2 NEWHA)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Only 1:29 into the contest, it was the Eagles getting on the board with a goal that was originally waved off as a score. Freshman forward Georgia Stevens took aim at senior goalie Eve Stone in the net, who seemingly made the save on the left side of the crease, forcing a faceoff. But after deliberation amongst the referees, they ruled it puck crossed the line before Stone made the stop, giving Post their 1-0 lead.

Through two periods of action, the score remained 1-0 with senior goalie Hannah Saunders making 27 saves, while Stone needed to make just 13 stops between the pipes. Stonehill had three power play opportunities in the first 40 minutes, but Saunders made six saves during those chances. Post's two power plays would also go by the wayside, with Stone making five saves combined during them.

With time winding down in the second, sophomore defenseman Caryss Kehl nearly gave Post a two-goal lead heading into the break. But senior forward Maddy Noonan's presence in the crease just before Kehl wrapped it into the right side of the goal caused the goal to be waved off with 29 seconds left to keep it at a one-score game with the Eagles still on the power play.

To start off the third, Post would end up going on a 5-on-3 power play after senior forward Bailey Feeney's cross-checking penalty, but nothing would come off that opportunity as Stone stopped three chances. In all, the Eagles had three man-up chances in the third, while the Skyhawks had their own 5-on-3 power play down the back half of the frame, but Saunders continued to quell every shot she faced.

That was until Achtyl rifled a shot by Saunders with 4:31 remaining in regulation, which would force the 3-on-3 overtime session. Only 40 seconds in, Noonan would have a chance on the breakaway to beat Stone for the game-winning shot, but the senior would make the blocker save, and with 2:15 remaining, Achtyl would deal the finishing blow with her second goal of the game, giving Stonehill the come-from-behind victory, 2-1.
