Alfalla Records Team-High Four RBIs in Baseball Split with Mercy

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior infielder Jesse Alfalla led the Post University Baseball offense with four RBIs, going 3-for-8 at the plate for the Eagles, who split their doubleheader on Friday afternoon with Mercy University, dropping the nine-inning first game, 6-5, before coming back to win game two, 7-4, in seven innings. The win for Post snapped a 14-game losing streak dating back to last season, as well as a three-game losing streak to the Mavericks, which dated back to 2015.

THE BASICS

Post University 5, Mercy University 6

Post University 7, Mercy University 4 (7 Innings)

Post University (1-5)

Mercy University (4-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The pitching for Post would allow 10 total runs across both games, but only four of them would be earned as the fielding for the Eagles committed a total of four errors in the two games played. In game one, junior right-hander Sebastian Velazquez surrendered three runs (two earned) on one hit with four walks, three strikeouts, three hit batters, and two wild pitches. Mercy scored three runs on wild pitches, two of which came with Velazquez on the mound, while the third came from junior right-hander Zion Fraser in the eighth inning.

In all, the Mavericks had just four hits in game one off Velasquez and Fraser combined, but the duo allowed six runs (four earned) due to seven walks, six hit batters, and four wild pitches as a whole, with just seven strikeouts, leading to Fraser taking the loss. Post did take an early 2-0 lead on a run-scoring error from sophomore pitcher Andre Jenkins and an RBI walk by Alfalla, before walks and wild pitches flipped the game back in favor of Mercy.

Graduate infielder Hunter Keller and Alfalla knocked in two total runs to tie the game at four in the eighth, but it was short-lived as a Fraser error and wild pitch both led to the Mavericks jumping back ahead. The Eagles did have a chance in the ninth to take the lead back as graduate shortstop Evan Cornwell singled in a run with two outs after Post had runners on the corners with nobody out to start the frame. With runners on first and second with two outs, sophomore pitcher Ryan DiNapoli shut the door on a 6-5 win for the Mavericks, getting Keller to ground into a fielder's choice.

Coming back in game two with a victory, seven runs across three innings for the Eagles would be enough for them to grab their first win of the season and a split with Mercy on Friday night in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Trailing 1-0 early with freshman right-hander Jacob Schrage on the mound, Alfalla got the scoring started for the Post offense with his two-run single, which was one of five run-scoring singles during the seven-run blitz that gave them a 7-1 lead.

All those runs came off junior pitcher Nevin Scaperotti, who lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks, before the Maverick bullpen allowed only one hit and two walks while striking out two batters over the final 2 2/3 innings of the contest. None of the four runs that Post pitching allowed in the 7-4 win would be earned due to two errors by the defense, giving Schrage and freshman right-hander Eddie Torres a combined line of six innings pitched, allowing four runs (none earned) on four hits with 11 strikeouts, three walks, and a wild pitch.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Manny Contreras continued his hot hitting with three more hits, including two doubles with two runs scored in five at-bats across one game for Post University
  • In the doubleheader, Jesse Alfalla combined to go 3-for-8 with four RBIs, leading the team in the runs batted in category
  • Of the 10 runs allowed by Post pitching today, only four of the runs were earned, as the fielding for the Eagles committed four combined errors in the two games
  • The victory in the second game for Post University snapped a three-game losing streak against Mercy University dating back to the 2015 season -- The two teams squared off once last season in Myrtle Beach on February 21st, 2025, with the Mavericks coming out on top, 11-6
