Offensive Outburst for Baseball Leads to 30 Combined Runs in Weekend Wins Against Southern Connecticut and D'Youville

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Between an eight-run outburst in the sixth inning of Saturday night's 11-7 victory against Southern Connecticut State University and a high-scoring 19-12 affair against D'Youville University early Sunday morning, Post University Baseball produced an onslaught of 30 combined runs in less than 24 hours to win their second and third consecutive games, closing out their Myrtle Beach trip on a three-game winning streak after an 0-5 start to the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 11, Southern Connecticut State University 7

A total of eight unearned runs by Southern Connecticut pitching would be the catalyst for the Eagles securing their second consecutive win as the teams headed into the sixth inning tied as junior infielder Spencer Chard's two-run double sparked a three-run third for the Owls, before graduate shortstop Evan Cornwell's RBI single and a sacrifice fly from graduate outfielder Andrew Hartman tied the game back up at three all.

Sophomore right-hander Harry Roy took the mound in the sixth for Southern Connecticut, retiring the first two batters with ease before sophomore outfielder Jayren Foster's double looked to start a rally for Post. However, junior infielder Alex Cappellucci's misplay at second resulted in graduate infielder Hunter Keller reaching base safely as the inning would unravel. From there, Roy would walk two batters, hit another, and allow an RBI single to junior infielder Jesse Alfalla, turning the tie game into a 6-3 lead for Post.

Sophomore right-hander Owen Sotero came in to relieve Roy, walking the first batter he faced, before a two-run single by sophomore infielder Ryan Davie with the bases loaded turned into a bases-clearing play because of an error from junior outfielder Jake Chacho in center. While that would be the end of the scoring for the Eagles, the result was an eight-run lead, 11-3, that the Owls would be unable to come back from.

Four runs in the seventh by Southern Connecticut brought the deficit down to four, 11-7, before freshman right-hander Andrew Hardin came in with runners on the corners with two outs and the tying run on deck, constituting a save situation in relief of freshman left-hander Gavin Diegnan, who picked up his first collegiate win on the mound, Hardin would earn his first collegiate save as well, striking out sophomore utilityman Auggie Albert to end the seventh as part of his 2 1/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

Game 2: Post University 19, D'Youville University 12
A game of runs saw the Eagles score the first 10 runs of the affair before the Saints answered back with 10 unanswered runs across two innings to tie the game back up in the fifth inning. It was a six-run first inning for the Post offense, led by a two-run double from Hartman and junior first baseman Evan Urglavitch's two-run double as well to break open the game, before he would add another run on his fourth-inning single to give his team a 10-0 lead. Of the seven run-scoring hits in the first five frames, five of them were extra-base hits coming from five different Post players.

But the lead would evaporate starting in the fourth with a solo home run by senior first baseman Colby Wilson off senior right-hander Harby Valera, who allowed seven runs in 4 1/3 innings to the Saints. During a nine-run fifth inning that tied the game at 10, three different D'Youville batters would record RBI singles off Valera before he was lifted for freshman right-hander Hector Cuevas. Only able to get one out, Cuevas was charged with three of the 10 runs after walking two batters, hitting another, and allowing a hit as it was a brand new ballgame heading into the sixth.

But the response from Post would be swift, scoring the next five runs after an RBI single by Urglavitch, who finished the game 4-for-6 with five RBIs, and finished off the five-run stretch with yet another single in the seventh. Junior outfielder Kevan Dize also added two RBIs in the final three innings with an RBI single in the seventh and a sacrifice fly in the ninth to finish off the 19-run performance by the Eagle offense in the win.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • To close the trip, Jayren Foster finished with a .476 batting average, going 10-for-21 with four doubles, seven RBIs, six runs scored, two walks, and a stolen base -- Foster had three doubles and four RBIs in the final two games
  • In Sunday's win against D'Youville University, Evan Urglavitch led the Post University offense, going 4-for-6 with a double, five RBIs, and one run scored
  • Gavin Diegnan earned his first collegiate win on the mound in relief of Justin Hascup against Southern Connecticut State University, while Andrew Hardin picked up his first collegiate save after coming into the game in a game-tying situation and finishing the final 2 1/3 innings
