Baseball Falls to #1 University of Tampa, 19-8, in Second Game of the Season from Florida

TAMPA, Fla. –  Three players for Post University Baseball recorded multi-hit games as the Eagles were unable to keep up with the offensive explosion from #1 University of Tampa on Saturday afternoon in Florida, falling to the Spartans, 19-8, behind a five-RBI day from junior catcher Walker Vanecek.

THE BASICS

Post University 8, #1 University of Tampa 19

Post University (0-2)

#1 University of Tampa (7-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore infielder Gill Dolan gave the Eagles the lead in the third inning, singling up the middle against senior right-hander John Luke Glanton, who moved to 3-0 on the mound for the Spartans. Glanton's line saw him close after 4 1/3 innings of five-hit ball in which he allowed five runs (one earned) with three strikeouts, two walks, and a wild pitch. Of the eight runs that Tampa pitchers allowed, only four of them were earned due to five fielding errors by the defense.

Adding on to the Post lead was sophomore infielder Rene Vega III, as he reached base on a fielder's choice, making it a two-run game, before the Spartans answered back with 11 unearned runs over the next two innings. Freshman right-hander Justin Hascup took the mound for his first collegiate start, lasting only two innings, allowing three runs on four hits with a walk and a hit batter before being relieved by fellow freshman right-hander Jacob Schrage, who pitched 1 1/3 innings for the Eagles.

Junior first baseman Evan Urglavitch singled in two runs in the fifth as part of his 2-for-5 day with two RBIs, while senior catcher Manny Contreras' ground-rule double made the once nine-run deficit and six-run deficit, 11-5, heading into the bottom of the frame. However, the Spartans responded with eight runs over the next three innings, with Post only being able to match with three more in the sixth, in part from two wild pitches in what would be a 19-8 loss to the defending back-to-back national champions.

Walker Vanecek finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs, hitting a grand slam in the fourth inning. Both senior second baseman Brayden Woodburn and senior catcher Jhoander Irigoyen each recorded four RBIs, combining to go 5-for-5 with four runs scored, while Woodburn hit a two-run home run and RBI double.

Both Urglavitch and Contreras each had two-hit performances, as did Dolan for Post, with the sophomore Dolan scoring a team-high three times, with Contreras right behind him with two runs scored.
