Baseball Falls Short Against #1 University of Tampa, 5-2

TAMPA, Fla. –  Graduate shortstop Evan Cornwell had a two-run single in the fifth inning for Post University Baseball in their 2026 season opener against the back-to-back national defending champions and national number one team, University of Tampa, as the Eagles came up just short against the Spartans on Friday night in Tampa, 5-2.

THE BASICS

Post University 2, #1 University of Tampa 5

Post University (0-1)

#1 University of Tampa (6-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Three first-inning runs were all the Spartans would end up needing as a one-out walk issued by senior right-hander Justin Portes to junior infielder Jesse Ponce led to him getting to third on an error by Portes. After hitting senior second baseman Brayden Woodburn with a pitch, he would steal second and end up on third while Ponce scored on a passed ball from senior catcher Manny Contreras

Hitting his first of two home runs in the affair, senior catcher Jhoander Irigoyen's two-run shot gave the Spartans a quick 3-0 lead, which would extend to four runs on Irigoyen's fourth-inning solo shot. Portes would close his line after four innings in which he allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits with four strikeouts, three walks, two hit batters, and a wild pitch on 78 total pitches.

Junior left-hander Robert Satin would deal in five innings on the mound for the University of Tampa, punching out 10 Eagle hitters in that stretch while allowing just three hits and two unearned runs with one walk. Post's fifth inning saw them load the bases with no outs after a Ponce error, junior infielder Maico Cardona's single, and a walk to sophomore outfielder Jayren Foster. Satin would strike out the next two Post batters he faced before Cornwell's two-run single cut the deficit in half for Post, 4-2.

After Satin worked out of the inning, his day would be done in favor of junior right-hander Sammy Beir, who picked up his second save of the season, as he would allow just one batter to reach base via graduate infielder Hunter Keller's two-out single in the seventh. Beir had seven strikeouts on the mound, bringing the total for the Spartans up to 17 for the game, as they would add on an insurance run in the eighth with Woodburn's solo home run.

After Portes' outing, junior right-hander Sebastian Velasquez finished out the game for the Eagles, pitching the final four innings, allowing the solo shot to Woodburn along with three other hits while striking out two, walking one, and hitting one in the 5-2 loss.
