Eagles lose NEWHA opener to LIU at home, 0-3

SHELTON, Conn. (Oct. 9, 2026) -- Women's Ice Hockey lost to Long Island University, 0-3 Friday afternoon at the Sports Center of Connecticut to open New England Women's Hockey Alliance play.

THE BASICS

Post 0, LIU 3

LIU: 1-2 (1-0-0 NEWHA)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Sharks bested the Eagles in the shots category, 20-6 in the first period and 10-2 in shots on goal, starting conference play strong. The Eagles defense stood tall in front of goalie Alex Young, blocking seven shots in the period, but finally caving at 12:45 in the period when Sharks freshman Parker Small scored her first collegiate goal.

The Sharks gained a power-play opportunity at 2:16 as the second period commenced, unable to convert as Rylie Griffiths blocked two shots, and Young came up with a save. Directly following the Sharks power-play, the Eagles fired five shots at LIU goalie, Kayla Czkoski. The rest of the period continued without a score for either team, but Post took an improved nine shots on goal in the period, to LIU's seven, looking to carry forth momentum to the last period of play.

Post began the third period with two more penalties at 1:08 and 4:47, creating more opportunities for the Sharks to extend their lead, but they still could not convert on either. LIU climbed their way back to the top of the shot advantage, besting Post 13-5 in shots on goal in the period, eventually converting on one at 14:24 and again at 18:22, just four seconds after Young left the ice, the latter of which became Small's second goal of the game and her career. Young exited the game with 27 saves and a .931 save percentage.

Celena Mickevicius led the way for her team in shots Friday afternoon with eight, half of them on goal.

WHO'S NEXT

Post will travel to LIU to face the Sharks Saturday at 2 p.m. to finish their home-and-away series to open conference play, looking to even the season series at one apiece.
