Amundson Makes 21 Saves in First Win of Season, Women's Ice Hockey Snaps Three-Game Losing Streak to Saint Michael's

SHELTON, Conn. – Sophomore goalie Devyn Amundson earned her first win of the season in net for Post University Women's Ice Hockey as the Eagles overcame an early one-goal deficit at home on Friday night against Saint Michael's College, snapping their three-game losing streak with a 2-1 win.

THE BASICS

Post University 2, Saint Michael's College 1

Post University (8-16-1, 8-10-1 NEWHA)

Saint Michael's College (1-22-0, 1-18-0 NEWHA)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After being held scoreless for 10 consecutive periods, junior forward Anna Jerlyo broke the drought for a Purple Knights team that had three power plays in the opening frame against Post, including a brief 18-second, 5-on-3 advantage after Jerlyo's score. The goal came on the first power play for Saint Michael's as a loose puck on the initial shot from freshman forward Kyler Weatherred could not be handled by Amundson.

Weatherred's shot would squirt under the pad of Amundson near the goal line, and freshman forward Peyton Tully looked to get it out of harm's way before Jerlyo came in to finish the shot attempt. Senior goalie Annika Lavender would make nine saves, including two on the lone Post power play of the first, keeping her team ahead, 1-0.

Junior forward Celena Mickevicius would get the goal back for Post on the power play in the second period, snapping a five-game stretch in which the Eagles had not scored on the man advantage as junior defenseman Emma Hoen and sophomore defenseman Caryss Kehl fed her at the point. Mickevicius' shot would get redirected by a Purple Knight stick and through the legs of Lavender to tie the game at one all heading into the third.

In that final period, the Eagle defense would clamp down on Saint Michael's, allowing just three shots on goal against Amundson, while rifling off 20-plus shots for the second straight period on Lavender. In all, the senior would stop 58 of 60 shots from Post, including 22 in the second and 27 in the third, after Saint Michael's held an 11-9 advantage after the first period in shots. The difference in the game would come off the stick of Hoen as her forced turnover in the neutral zone would lead to a shot that deflected off the shoulder of Lavender and pop into the net with 6:33 left in regulation.

After that goal, Amundson would not be tested the rest of the night by Saint Michael's as Post continued to control puck possession, leading to their 2-1 victory to snap the three-game skid.
