MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Freshman goalie
John Simon had a solid third start of the season for Post University Men's Ice Hockey, stopping 35 shots, while senior forward
Jacob Howell's goal with 48.7 seconds left in regulation forced a second consecutive overtime game for the Eagles, who fell to Saint Anselm College in overtime in Friday night's road matchup, 2-1.
THE BASICS
Post University 1, Saint Anselm College 2 (OT)
Post University (3-12-1, 2-7-1 NE10)
Saint Anselm College (4-9-4, 4-3-2 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior goalie Cam Carroll and Simon went toe-to-toe in net with each other, as the freshman needed 14 saves in the first period to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard, while Carroll made all eight stops he needed to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes, including two on a power play for the Eagles.
It would be senior forward Cam Collins breaking through for Saint Anselm in the second period, giving them a 1-0 lead, while Carroll continued to stifle Post with 13 more saves, including shutting down another Eagle man-up advantage, which netted them four shots on goal against the junior.
Having a golden opportunity with another 5-on-4 chance in the waning minutes of the third, that advantage would be wiped out by an interference call going against sophomore forward
Max Beaulac for his contact with Carroll in the net, sending the game to 4-on-4 with 2:32 left in regulation. Then would come the equalizer with Post playing with a man down and Simon still in the net, as a turnover by the Hawks in the neutral zone left the door open for sophomore defenseman
Eoin Reager and senior forward
Joe Santoro to feed Howell a right-side pass for the shot and score on Carroll with 48.7 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
However, scoring in less than a minute would be sophomore forward Brendan Manning, giving the Hawks the victory, 2-1, in the 3-on-3 overtime. On both goals of the night for Saint Anselm, it was senior forwards Luke Linart and Garrett Alberti picking up assists en route to their two-point games.
