WORCESTER, Mass. – Two power play goals for the Assumption University offense would be all the Greyhounds needed to hold off Post University Women's Ice Hockey on Saturday evening on the road, as senior forward
Tristan Currie's third-period score would not be enough for the Eagles to overcome a two-goal deficit, splitting the weekend with a 4-1 loss.
THE BASICS
Post University 1, Assumption University 4
Post University (7-14-1, 7-8-1 NEWHA)
Assumption University (9-11-2, 9-5-2 NEWHA)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Like yesterday, it would be a scoreless first period for both sides as senior goalie
Hannah Saunders made a game-high 19 saves in that frame alone, while junior goalie Jaydn Weiser stopped 12 shots. The Greyhounds, who had five power plays in the game, would have one in the first on a tripping penalty issued to freshman forward
Peyton Tully, registering three shots against Saunders, all of which were quelled.
The same would not be true in the second period, as two more power-play chances for Assumption led to the first goal of the affair as junior forward Caroline Lilley got her team on the board with the help of junior forwards Kayla McGaffigan and Ava McGaffigan. Ava McGaffigan would go on to give the Greyhounds some breathing room early in the third period with her power-play goal, but 57 seconds later, it was Currie with the quick shot by Weiser's pads to cut the Post deficit in half, 2-1.
While Assumption finished the day 2-for-5 on the power play, they would not need an extra attacker to tack on their third goal of the game, courtesy of sophomore forward Heather Ajakie just over four minutes after Currie's goal. Junior defenseman Kaitlyn Cielo would add an empty net goal late in the third, securing the 4-1 win for the Greyhounds and a weekend split with the Eagles. Saunders would make 45 saves in the game, allowing three goals, while Weiser stopped 40 shots after only making 13 saves yesterday in Shelton, Connecticut.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Emma Hoen's four-game point streak was snapped as she finished without a point in today's loss -- Hoen did not record any shots in the game
- Kayla McGaffigan and Natalie Joiner each finished with two points for Assumption University, each accounting for two assists in the win for the Greyhounds
- Hannah Saunders made 45 saves in net for Post University, allowing three goals in the process -- Saunders falls to 7-10-1 on the season

WHO'S NEXT
Post University hits the road next weekend for a two-game set against Franklin Pierce University on 7:00 PM on both Friday and Saturday. The two teams split their two-game set at the Sports Center of Connecticut back in October, with the Ravens winning the first game, 2-0, and the Eagles coming back in the second game with a 3-2 victory.
