Come-From-Behind Efforts Highlight Baseball's Home Split with Holy Family

WATERBURY, Conn. –  A pair of come-from-behind efforts from both Post University Baseball and Holy Family University highlighted the doubleheader matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Municipal Stadium between the two clubs as the Eagles overcame an early 5-0 deficit in game one for the 10-7 victory, while the Tigers scored six unanswered runs over the final two innings of game two, forcing the split with an 8-3 win, their first against Post in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 7, Holy Family University 10

Accounting for four of the first five Holy Family runs scored over the first five innings, senior infielder Marc Garcia had a pair of two-RBI hits via his third-inning single and fifth-inning double to help the Tigers jump out to a 5-0 lead after 4 ½ innings of play against sophomore right-hander Sebastian Velasquez

Velasquez would end up getting a no-decision after his five innings in which he allowed those five runs (four earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks as the Eagles struck for five runs in the bottom of the frame. Three singles around the 20th hit-by-pitch dealt to graduate first baseman Hayden Roberge with graduate pitcher Hayden Ford wiped out that five-run Holy Family lead, tying it at five all with four innings left.

Finishing off a stretch of eight unanswered runs, three more runs came across the plate for Post in the sixth inning as sophomore outfielder Dario Sosa gave the Eagles their lead for the first time in the game with his RBI double, followed up by an RBI single from junior catcher Eric Perez and a double play by freshman infielder Rene Vega III to make it an 8-5 game.

A pair of seventh-inning doubles from the Tigers off of freshman right-hander Logan Pultiano briefly cut the Post lead down to one, 8-7, before graduate outfielders Isaiah Velazco and Jaylen Kelley both drove in a run, reupping the edge to three runs, 10-7, leading the Eagles to its victory in game one.

Sophomore left-hander Kyle Sparks, who threw one inning in relief of Velasquez, picked up his first win of the season while Pulitano closed the door on the final three innings for his second save of the year.

Game 2: Post University 3, Holy Family University 8 (7 Innings)
Putting up a two-spot in the first inning, senior third baseman Justin Rivera's RBI double and a Velazco RBI ground out helped the Eagles carry their momentum from game one over to the second game against graduate pitcher Casey Murphy, who would end up settling down and going the distance for the Tigers. Following that first inning, Murphy would end up allowing all three of Post's runs (two earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts, two walks, and a hit batter.

Holy Family would end up tying the game at two in the third off of an infield single from senior outfielder Brian Comer and a sacrifice fly by Garcia against sophomore right-hander Zion Fraser, who made the start. Stealing the lead back against Murphy in the fourth, Vega III's RBI single gave Post a one-run lead with Fraser continuing to deal into the sixth, where the Tigers struck for six unanswered runs en route to the split.

After loading the bases with one out, Fraser would be lifted for freshman right-hander CJ Pierce in hopes of getting a five-out save to secure the doubleheader sweep for the Eagles. However, Pierce would hit the first batter he faced in freshman outfielder Jalen David, a ball that was argued to have tipped off his bat initially, leading to the tying run before a shallow sacrifice fly from senior outfielder Stefan Leo gave the Tigers the lead, 4-3.

Breaking the game open in the seventh, a grand slam from junior outfielder Torin McKenzie put the game out of reach for Post as Murphy rolled through the bottom half of the inning to put a cap on the 8-3 comeback for Holy Family, leaving Municipal Stadium with a split.
