Isaiah Velazco Goes 7-for-7 in Baseball's Doubleheader Sweep of Bridgeport

WATERBURY, Conn. – Graduate catcher Isaiah Velazco went 7-for-7 on Sunday afternoon for Post University Baseball, driving in four runs in their doubleheader against the University of Bridgeport at LaMoy Field to help the Eagles sweep past the Purple Knights, 11-6 and 2-0. Graduate right-hander Joe Christiana threw a complete-game shutout in game two, winning his fifth game of the season and the 23rd of his career to set the new all-time wins record, surpassing Nick Arnold (2015-18).

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 11, University of Bridgeport 6

Scoring six of their 11 runs in the first two innings, Post University jumped out to a 6-0 lead, increasing it to as many as nine runs on the third innings following an RBI double from Velazco. Velazco, along with freshman infielder Rene Vega III, accounted for six of the nine RBIs that the Eagles had in game one while combining to have seven total hits and four runs scored.

Velazco finished game one going 5-for-5 with a double, three RBIs, and two runs scored while Vega III was 2-for-5 with a double, three RBIs, and two runs scored in the 11-6 win. Senior right-hander Brennan Holligan spun six innings in which he allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits with nine strikeouts and a walk. Holligan's first strikeout of the game coincided with his 200th collegiate strikeout between his time at Post and with the College of Southern Nevada.

Junior right-hander Brendan Palmer lasted just 2 2/3 innings for Bridgeport after allowing 10 runs (six earned) on 10 hits with four wild pitches, three walks, and a strikeout. Defensively, both teams combined for seven total errors, leading to five unearned runs overall. Trailing by eight heading into the ninth, senior infielder Vin Mallon's two-run double and sophomore infielder Tyler Pennisi's RBI double brought Bridgeport within five with runners on the corners and two outs.

Shutting the door on the comeback bid was junior outfielder Harby Valera, who threw the final three innings of the affair to pick up his first save of the season by virtue of the three-inning save rule.

Game 2: Post University 2, University of Bridgeport 0 (7 Innings)
Christiana's performance saw the right-hander go the distance with seven innings of shutout ball in which he allowed just two hits while striking out 10 batters and walking three on 102 total pitches. Only three runners for the Purple Knights would get in scoring position against Christiana via a sacrifice bunt, a double, and a stolen base, while none got past second following the fifth inning, where the graduate student struck out five of the final six Bridgeport hitters.

Junior pitcher James Ackerman was equally as impressive for the Purple Knights in his complete game, in which he allowed no earned runs despite two runs being plated for Post. Senior outfielder Marcos Dominguez would misplay a ball in center to open up the second as senior third baseman Justin Rivera would scamper all the way to third and come home on graduate outfielder Hayden Roberge's RBI single to give the Eagles their 1-0 lead before Ackerman escaped the inning.

Another miscue from Dominguez in the third allowed Vega III to get all the way to third base to lead off the frame, resulting in Velazco driving him home in the very next at-bat, extending Post's edge to two runs, before once again Ackerman got out of trouble to limit the damage. In all, the junior allowed those two unearned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts, two walks, and two hit batters, taking his sixth loss of the season in the 2-0 win for the Eagles.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Joe Christiana surpassed Nick Arnold (2015-18) for the most career wins in program history as a pitcher, recording his 23rd win in game two with a complete-game shutout
