Baseball Earns Split Against Bridgeport in Monday's Road Doubleheader

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Graduate outfielder Jaylen Kelley mashed a two-run home run, his second of the season, for Post University Baseball in their 11-5 victory in game one before freshman right-hander Alex Bulger threw a complete game in game two for the University of Bridgeport, helping the Purple Knights salvage the final game of the four-game set with the Eagles, 8-1, on Monday afternoon in Bridgeport.

THE BASICS

Post University 11, University of Bridgeport 5

Post University 1, University of Bridgeport 8 (7 Innings)

Post University (20-15, 16-6 CACC)

University of Bridgeport (10-29, 8-18 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 11, University of Bridgeport 5

Graduate catcher Isaiah Velazco and Kelley finished game one a combined 4-for-7 with six RBIs, three runs scored, two stolen bases, a home run, and a walk to propel Post to their 11-5 victory. Kelley's two-run home run in the fifth broke open the game as part of a five-run inning for the Eagles after they entered the frame tied at three.

Two of Velazco's three runs batted in came in the first three innings, helping Post take an early 1-0 lead in the first as well as reclaim the lead briefly, 3-2, in the third, before that big fifth inning, which kicked off a stretch of seven unanswered runs for the Eagles, giving them a 10-3 lead.

Junior left-hander Matt Wild would get charged with eight runs (three earned) on 12 hits with two walks, two hit batters, and a strikeout across 4 2/3 innings for the Purple Knights, taking his fourth loss of the season. Senior right-hander Justin Portes would get a no-decision for Post, lasting only 3 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with six walks, four strikeouts, three wild pitches, and a hit batter.

Earning the first win of his collegiate career, freshman right-hander Logan Pulitano threw 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on five hits with two walks, a wild pitch, and a strikeout. All 10 Post hitters in the ball game finished with at least one hit, with seven recording multi-hit games as the Eagles had a season-high six stolen bases in the win.

Game 2: Post University 1, University of Bridgeport 8 (7 Innings)
Bulger's gem saw him throw 92 pitches across his complete seven innings of work while allowing just one run on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore right-hander Jake Baumann allowed only two earned runs despite being on the hook for all eight runs allowed to the Purple Knights in his 5 1/3 innings, scattering six hits while striking out seven, walking two, and hitting a batter on 103 pitches before being lifted for freshman right-hander Sean Nowicky

Sophomore infielder Tyler Pennisi's two-run double in the second accounted for one of Baumann's two earned runs as senior third baseman Justin Rivera's error with one out allowed junior infielder Anthony Matturo to eventually make his way around the base paths as well as give the Purple Knights a 2-0 lead. Baumann's only other earned run came in the sixth after Nowicky allowed a one-out single to senior infielder Marcos Dominguez.

Post's lone run of the affair came in the fourth on a Velazco RBI ground out as he was one of five Eagles to record a hit in the 8-1 loss, snapping a nine-game winning streak in the head-to-head matchup with Bridgeport.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Logan Pulitano picked up his first collegiate win for Post University after throwing 4 1/3 innings of relief in which he allowed one run on five hits with two walks and a strikeout – Pulitano earned his first collegiate save earlier this year against Georgian Court University at home
  • Recording six stolen bases in game one of the doubleheader, that is the most stolen bases in a single game for Post University since April 20th, 2018, when they had seven stolen bases in a 15-10 home win against Caldwell University
  • Committing three errors in game two, Post University has now had three or more errors in nine games this season – The Eagles are 4-5 when committing three-plus errors in a game
  • The game two win for the University of Bridgeport snaps Post University's nine-game winning streak in the head-to-head matchup as well as their first conference win against the Eagles in program history – Post's nine-game win streak in the all-time series was the longest they ever had, with the previous being just three games

WHO'S NEXT
Finishing off their six games in three days, Post University heads to Jefferson University tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader against the Rams starting at 1:00 PM. The last time these two teams met was the CACC Championship Game in which the Eagles came out on top, 4-3, to win their first conference championship in program history.
