In Final Doubleheader of Road Trip, Softball Swept by Goldey-Beacom College

WILMINGTON, Del. –  In one of the most grueling stretches of the season since the Florida trip to start the year, Post University Softball closed out its eight games in four days early this morning with a pair of conference games against Goldey-Beacom College in Delaware. Extending its winning streak to five straight games in the all-time series, the Lightning swept through the doubleheader in five innings apiece, 10-1 and 10-2, on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 1, Goldey-Beacom College 10 (5 Innings)

Eight of the nine players in the starting lineup recorded an RBI for the Lightning, while all nine starters and 11 of the 12 total hitters that made an appearance finished with at least one hit as part of a 10-run, 14-hit game one against sophomore left-hander Devin Barnett. Barnett, who fell to 0-11 this season, threw all four innings, allowing 10 runs on 14 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Senior right-hander Cat Nelson allowed just three hits in her five innings of work, giving up one unearned run, which came in the fourth inning, while striking out five and walking one. Nelson's own error with one out led to freshman utility player Angelica Tompkins reaching base safely before, later in the frame, senior infielder Brooke Dickenson scored her for the only run of the day by Post.

All 10 of the Goldey-Beacom runs came in the first three innings of action, including a six-run second inning that spearheaded them to a 9-0 lead. The Lightning as a team manufactured just four extra-base hits, two of which came off the bat of sophomore utility player McKenna Frank. Batting in the leadoff spot, Frank was 2-for-4 with a double and triple, scoring twice, and driving in a run in the 10-1 victory.

Game 2: Post University 2, Goldey-Beacom College 10 (5 Innings)
Senior right-hander Alyssa Hughes pitched for the fifth time in six days, in what was her fifth straight complete game, as the Eagles fell 10-2 in game two of the doubleheader. Since Sunday, Hughes has thrown 583 pitches, reaching triple digits in the first four outings in that span, before throwing 94 pitches in her four innings of work today. The senior closed the day having allowed 10 runs on 12 hits with three walks and a wild pitch, dropping to 1-10 on the season.

However, early on, the Eagles would have their chances against the Lightning despite falling behind 3-0 after the first inning, following three RBI doubles by the heart of the order. Against senior right-hander Devon Ellixson, Post's second inning would get them back into the affair after four walks, between a single by freshman utility player Alexandra Bisceglia made it a 3-2 ballgame. Ellixson would get pulled after walking freshman outfielder Isabella Oliver in favor of senior right-hander Caitlyn Burch.

After Burch was able to escape the bases loaded jam with back-to-back strikeouts, the senior held the Eagle bats in check over the next 3 2/3 innings, allowing just two runners to reach via hits while striking out six, hitting one, and throwing a wild pitch. Senior utility player Ariana Mirenda and freshman catcher Bri Cole led the Lightning in the third inning as Mirenda hit a two-run home run following Cole's three-run shot that provided the spark for Goldey-Beacom to enact the eight-run mercy rule after Burch set down Post over the next two innings.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • McKenna Frank went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader for Goldey-Beacom College with two doubles, a triple, two RBIs, a stolen base, a walk, and five runs scored
  •  Brooke Dickenson accounted for the lone RBI hit of the day for Post University -- Dickenson now has 15 RBIs on the season, including eight since April 10th -- Dickenson's triple play in the fourth inning of game two is the first known triple play in program history for Post University

WHO'S NEXT
Playing in its final home doubleheader of the season, Post University will hit LaMoy Field one last time in 2025 to take on Georgian Court University on Monday afternoon at 2:00 PM. Due to rain, the game has been rescheduled twice from March 31st and April 7th, but will coincide with the final conference games of the season for the Eagles. Post has only beaten the Lions once since 2018, an 11-10 victory in game one of their doubleheader at home, dropping the other 13 matchups.
