WATERBURY, Conn. – Junior right-hander Frankie DeMaro threw six shutout innings for Southern New Hampshire University at Municipal Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, snapping Post University Baseball's winning streak at five straight games with a 7-0 defeat. HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior right-hander
Justin Portes would get his first start since February 22nd for Post, working two scoreless innings around some second-inning trouble to keep the game even. The Penmen offense would make the most of a leadoff walk and hit batter from the senior as a double steal and single from graduate infielder Jorge Burgos gave Southern New Hampshire an early 2-0 advantage.
With runners on the corners and two outs, Portes would look to get sophomore outfielder Nater Wachter leading off of first but throw the ball past sophomore infielder
Maico Cardona at first, allowing Burgos to score from third for the third and final run of the half inning.
After a leadoff single for sophomore infielder Joel Valera, Portes' throw on junior catcher Chris Leone's attempted bunt would go into right field, allowing Valera to score from first while Leone ended up on third. Making it a 5-0 lead for the Penmen, sophomore outfielder Jacob Albert's sacrifice fly scored Leone, and following the next two hitters reaching base Portes' day would be over.
Graduate right-hander
Erik Gutowski would relieve Portes, retiring the next two batters to limit the damage to two runs and put a cap on the senior's line. Portes finished the game allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks, taking the loss in the affair.
Gutowski would allow one run in his inning of work on an RBI double by Valera in the fifth before the scoring from both sides would come to a halt until the ninth inning. Post's only threat would come in the fifth when they had runners on first and second with two outs before DeMaro got graduate outfielder
Hayden Roberge to ground out, Roberge finished the day 0-for-4, snapping his 11-game on-base streak.
Responsible for the final run of the afternoon, freshman right-hander
Tim Mingo made his Eagle debut, walking in Albert with one out and getting lifted for freshman right-hander
Sean Nowicky afterward. Also making his Post debut, Nowicky would escape the inning by retiring the final two batters, including striking out Burgos.
Sophomore infielder
Jesse Alfalla and freshman second baseman
Rene Vega III each finished the game with two hits for the Eagles. In all, five different Post players tallied hits in the 7-0 loss while Burgos and Albert led Southern New Hampshire University with two RBIs while Joel Valera went 3-for-5 with a double, RBI, and run scored.
