Allysa Calabrese Throws First Shutout Since 2023 for Softball, Eagles Win First Game of the Season Against Southern Connecticut

VIERA, Fla. – Sophomore right-hander Allysa Calabrese did it all for Post University Softball in the penultimate game of the spring trip to help the Eagles to their first win of the season, snapping a 12-game losing streak, and first shutout win since April 12th, 2023, against Bloomfield College on Wednesday afternoon.

Beating Southern Connecticut State University for the first time this season, Calabrese, who had not made a start since March 15th, 2024, spun a one-hit shutout in her first start of the season while scoring twice in the 2-0 win for Post.

THE BASICS

Post University 2, Southern Connecticut State University 0

Post University (1-12)

Southern Connecticut State University (9-4)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Taking the mound for the first time in over a year to make a start, Calabrese allowed just one hit which came with one out in the third inning to freshman infielder Izzy Ingersoll, coinciding with the only threat that the Owls would be able to muster up as they loaded the bases via a fielder's choice error and two-out walk to senior utility player Dominique DeLutri. Helping her own cause, Calabrese would get freshman utility player Kayla Wakely to pop out to her, ending the threat with the game still scoreless.

Breaking through against freshman right-hander Kate Nickerson, freshman utility player Alexandra Bisceglia singled with one out, getting the offense going as a two-out RBI double from senior infielder Bailey Dickenson after a Calabrese fielder's choice, scored the sophomore from first to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the fourth.

Meanwhile, after the jam in the third, Calabrese would proceed to allow just three more baserunners via two walks and a hit batter, but nothing would get across the plate against her. Stifling the Owls in the victory, Calabrese went seven innings allowing that one third-inning hit, four walks, one hit batter, and recorded one strikeout for her first collegiate win on the mound in only her third-ever start after primarily playing the outfield.

Senior third baseman Nyla Sapia added some insurance to the Post lead with her RBI single in the sixth inning, scoring Calabrese who in addition to her pitching went 0-for-3 at the plate while scoring both runs for the Eagles in their 2-0 win. Bailey Dickenson went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, making it three straight games with a hit and seven of her last nine games overall.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Allysa Calabrese made her first start since March 15th, 2024, before primarily playing in the outfield – Calabrese threw her first collegiate shutout after going seven innings and allowing no runs on one hit with four walks, a strikeout, and hit batter
