VIERA, Fla. – Freshman utility player
Angelica Tompkins made it two straight games with a run batted in, plating two runs on her RBI double in the fourth inning for Post University Softball to help them jump out to a 4-0 lead on Franklin Pierce University on Saturday in Florida. However, seven unanswered runs by the Ravens and four errors in the field by the Eagles would turn the tide of the matchup, sending Post to their seventh consecutive loss with a 7-5 final in their first game of the day.
THE BASICS
Post University 5, Franklin Pierce University 7
Post University (0-7)
Franklin Pierce University (6-5)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior right-hander
Alyssa Hughes had a strong start, which was her first of the season, keeping the Franklin Pierce bats at bay for the first three innings before the Post offense came to life in the fourth inning, providing her with a 4-0 lead. It would start with a two-run double by Tompkins, giving the Eagles a two-run lead, followed by senior infielder
Brooke Dickenson's RBI single to left and a fielder's choice from freshman utility player
Alexandra Bisceglia to give Post that four-run advantage.
Two infield hits from sophomore infielder Charlit Hartenstein and senior infielder Haley Bigwood would be two of the four total base knocks that the Ravens would manufacture in the bottom of the fourth, providing them with two runs to cut their deficit in half, 4-2, after a two-run single from freshman first baseman Maisie Lerette ended the inning with Bigwood being thrown out at home.
Finishing off a stretch of seven unanswered runs, two errors at third by senior third baseman
Nyla Sapia resulted in Franklin Pierce loading the bases and scoring twice on the second error by Sapia, tying the game with one out in the fifth. Still threatening for more, the Ravens loaded the bases back up for freshman third baseman Kaylee Fraund and Bigwood, who notched back-to-back infield singles that gave the opposition their first lead of the day, 6-4.
Freshman infielder Taylor Ellis, who tied the game when she reached base safely on Sapia's fifth-inning error, doubled home an insurance run in the sixth inning to cap off the seven-run swing by the Ravens. While Post would try to threaten in the seventh, sophomore utility player
Allysa Calabrese would make it a two-run game with one out via her RBI triple, but sophomore right-hander Kennedy Morris, who pitched the final 3 2/3 innings, retired the next two hitters, securing the 7-5 win for the Ravens.
Morris would pick up her fourth win of the season, throwing those 3 2/3 innings in which she allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts while Hughes suffered her first loss on the mound for the Eagles after going all six innings allowing seven runs (four earned) on 12 hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
