VIERA, Fla. – Freshman utility player
Angelica Tompkins drove in her first collegiate run as a member of the Post University Softball program while senior infielder
Bailey Dickenson plated her second run of the year in a 10-2 loss for the Eagles in five innings against D'Youville University to cap off day one at the Space Coast Spring Games. Earlier in the day, Post was defeated by the University of New Haven, 6-4, and with the loss to the Saints are now 0-6 to start the year.
THE BASICS
Post University 2, D'Youville University 10 (5 Innings)
Post University (0-6)
D'Youville University (5-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore left-hander
Devin Barnett got the start on the mound for the Eagles, lasting just 1 2/3 innings as she was tagged for seven runs (three earned) on seven hits while allowing two walks, two hit batters, and five wild pitches in her second appearance of the season. Barnett would be relieved by senior right-hander
Alyssa Hughes who pitched the final 3 1/3 innings to the tune of three runs (two earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks in the defeat.
Sophomore pitcher Kendal Lehnen held the Post bats in check for the first 3 2/3 innings before sophomore utility player
Allysa Calabrese broke through with her first and only hit of the game, leading to a
Bailey Dickenson RBI double that got the Eagles on the board in the fourth. Graduate utility player
Katelyn Lipsky's leadoff double in the fifth led to the second run of the affair for Post in the fifth via an RBI single from Topmkins, but trailing by eight runs still with two runners on and nobody out, the offense would be unable to push across another run as the five-inning, eight-run mercy rule came into effect.
In the 10-2 win for the Saints, Lehnen picked up the win on the mound after allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts while facing just 20 batters through the course of her five innings of work. Of the 14 hitters that came to bat for D'Youville, 12 of them finished the game with at least one hit while senior outfielder Emily Przybysz and sophomore infielder Kendall Sawyer each had two hits, combining to go 4-for-7 with a double, four runs scored, and two RBIs.
The five hits for Post were scattered across five different players, while in the field, they would commit four more errors, which resulted in five unearned runs. Of the five hits the Eagles were able to manufacture against Lehnen, the one by Tompkins would be the first of her collegiate career along with that first collegiate RBI that she was able to record in the fifth.
