Women's Ice Hockey Allows Five Unanswered Goals, Falls to Stonehill in First Game of Home-and-Home Weekend

NORTH EASTON, Mass. – Two first-period goals for Post University Women's Ice Hockey had the Eagles flying high on the road against Stonehill College with freshman goalie Devyn Amundson between the pipes on Friday night. But a storming from the Skyhawks in the second and third periods, leading to five unanswered goals for the home team helped them overcome that early two-goal deficit, downing Post by a 5-2 final score in the first game of the weekend home-and-home series.

THE BASICS

Post University 2, Stonehill College 5

Post University (9-17-3, 9-11-3 NEWHA)

Stonehill College (11-16-3, 11-9-3 NEWHA)

HOW IT HAPPENED
It would be all Post in the early going of this one as the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead against junior goalie Eve Stone to the tune of two goals in the first 13:50 of the first period. It started with junior forward Tymmarie Grom scoring just moments after the power-play opportunity for the Eagles ended and then just over a minute later it would be the fourth line doing the damage for the second straight game.

Junior forward Hannah Luckman scored her second goal of the season, making it back-to-back games in which she has lit the lamp with the help of sophomore forward Jet Devlin and freshman defenseman Ruby Mitchell. That same duo helped Luckman score her first goal last weekend against Saint Anselm College to help the Eagles come away with that 3-1 victory on home ice. Despite the two-goal lead, the offense for the Eagles would be held to just four shots on net against junior goalie Eve Stone who made two saves through 20 minutes.

But from there on out it would be all Stonehill the rest of the evening as five different goal-scorers found the back of the net over the final 40 minutes of action to help lead the comeback efforts by the Skyhawks. Junior defenseman Sydney Russell would finish the game with three points after netting an insurance goal in the third period following her two assists in the second period which helped Stonehill tie things up at two with 5:30 left in that frame.

All three of the Skyhawks' goals in the second came within 3 1/2 minutes of each other from the trio of junior forward Kathryn Karo, junior forward Lily Geist, and freshman defenseman Seina Spadone to give them the lead for good. After making just two saves in the opening period, Stone finished the game with 17 saves on 19 shots faced from the Eagle offense while Amundson closed the game with 24 saves, including 12 in the second period, while Stonehill came away with the 5-2 victory for their second straight win against Post this season.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • After allowing two goals in the first period, Eve Stone settled in to make 17 saves on 19 total attempts for Stonehill College to earn the win in net for the Skyhawks
  • Devyn Amundson took the loss in goal for Post University, allowing four goals while making 24 saves in her fourth collegiate start
  • This is the first time since November 26th in which Post University has allowed their opponent to score five goals in a game -- The Eagles lost 5-2 to Franklin Pierce University in that game before sweeping Sacred Heart University heading into the winter break
  • Post University has lost their last three matchups on the road against Stonehill College and both road games to the Skyhawks this season by a 7-2 margin
