Men's Ice Hockey Unable to Capitalize on Seven Power Plays, Fall 3-1 to Assumption

SHELTON, Conn. – The Post University Men's Ice Hockey offense would generate seven power-play opportunities on Saturday night against Assumption University at the Sports Center of Connecticut, but only be able to cash in on one of them as three unanswered goals by Assumption University would sink the Eagles for a second consecutive game, 3-1.

THE BASICS

Post University 1, Assumption University 3

Post University (1-2-0, 0-2-0 NE10)

Assumption University (3-1-0, 2-0-0 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
A scoreless first period for both sides saw Assumption hold a narrow 8-6 edge in shots on goal as sophomore goalie Michael Salvatore and senior goalie Benjamin Cunneen did battle between the pipes, with Cunneen playing for the second straight day. On only the second power-play opportunity of the day, Post would find the back of the net for their only goal of the evening as graduate defenseman Tanner Glasrud wheeled around a pass to senior forward Joe Santoro for the shot at the point, which was redirected by senior forward Baxter Kimball for the opening goal only 1:17 into the second period.

The lead would last just over 12 minutes as junior forward Jonathan Surrette answered back on the power play for the Greyhounds in what would be the first power-play goal allowed by the Eagles so far this season on 10 penalty kills after tonight. Junior defenseman Patrick McKiernan, who recorded an assist on Surrette's goal, which would be his first of two in the game, helped assist sophomore defenseman Caden Connors in the third to give Assumption their first lead of the game.

Despite a brief 5-on-3 opportunity for Post as part of three power-play chances in the latter half of the third period, Salvatore would keep the Eagles off the scoreboard, making 16 saves in the third period alone en route to a 31-save outing. On the other side, Cunneen would finish with 36 saves, including 19 saves in the second period alone, before Surrette hit the back of the empty net with six seconds remaining in regulation to seal the weekend sweep for Assumption in a 3-1 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS
  •  Michael Salvatore moves to 2-0-0 in net for Assumption University this season after allowing just one goal and making 31 saves in 60 minutes of action
  •  Patrick McKiernan and Jonathan Surrette each recorded multi-point games for Assumption University, with McKiernan finishing with two assists and Surrette with two goals
  • The seven power-play opportunities for Post University were the most since January 25th, 2025, against Southern New Hampshire University, when they had eight power plays, going 2-for-8 in that 3-2 loss to the Penmen
  • Since winning three consecutive games against Assumption University last year, Post University has now lost the last four games and allowing at least three goals in each contest

WHO'S NEXT
