Women's Ice Hockey Drops Conference Opener to Assumption, 2-0, at Home

SHELTON, Conn. – Junior goalie Jadyn Weiser made 26 saves for Assumption University to earn her third collegiate shutout and first of the season, while junior forward Kayla McGaffigan scored both goals for the Greyhounds, as Post University Women's Ice Hockey was blanked for the third time in five games, opening conference play on Friday afternoon at the Sports Center of Connecticut with a 2-0 loss.

THE BASICS

Post University 0, Assumption University 2

Post University (0-5-0, 0-1-0 NEWHA)

Assumption University (1-4-0, 1-0-0 NEWHA)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite the shots on goal margin being just 9-6 in favor of Post, it would take nearly seven minutes for Assumption to get its first shot on goal against senior goalie Hannah Saunders, as freshman forward Alaina Whitesell had the only shot attempt in that timeframe go wide of the net.

Winning a faceoff just seconds earlier, junior forward Kayla McGaffigan would net her first goal of the season after a strange hop took the puck off a few Post defenders, and she would get enough of the stick on it to flip it over Saunders for the lone goal of the period. That would be the catalyst for the Greyhounds' attack, which had 11 shots overall, and won 16 faceoffs to the Eagles' eight.

A second period riddled with penalties saw Post have two man-up chances, while Assumption had three attempts, with McGaffigan solving Saunders on a scrum in front for the second time in the waning moments of the frame. Leading up to that, the first power-play opportunity for the Greyhounds saw the Eagles have two cracks at Weiser.

Senior forward Maddy Noonan would nearly have a breakaway chance, but the puck was just out of her reach to the left of the goal mouth to manufacture a shot. Moments later, junior forward Celena Mickevicius was one-on-one with Weiser, who got a piece of her shot, knocking it wide right, keeping Assumption's lead at 1-0.

Post's first power-play would last only 1:13 as junior forward Jodie Rose was hit with a slashing penalty, while the second near the six-minute mark ended with only one shot on goal by junior forward Noa Farberman, which Weiser stopped.

A relatively stagnant third period saw neither side get any high-quality chances throughout the majority of it, until senior forward Tymmarie Grom's redirected shot with under five to go in regulation nearly caromed by Weiser. A short time later, junior forward Ava McGaffigan's penalty would give the Eagles a man-up chance with 3:56 left, but Weiser would turn away the only shot she faced.

Still with 1:36 remaining, Post would pull Saunders for the extra attacker in hopes of cutting their deficit in half, but would be unable to do so despite three shots against Weiser, who finished the game with 26 saves, leading her team to the 2-0 win.
