WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior forward
Tristan Currie scored her first goal of the season with only 2:15 left in regulation to help Post University Women's Ice Hockey force overtime against Assumption University as the two teams would work to a 1-1 tie in their conference matchup on Saturday night, before the Greyhounds came out on top, 2-0, in the shootout.
THE BASICS
Post University 1, Assumption University 1
Post University (0-5-1, 0-1-1 NEWHA)
Assumption University (1-4-1, 1-0-1 NEWHA)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Just over 24 hours after doing battle in Shelton, senior goalie
Hannah Saunders and junior goalie Jaydn Weiser went toe-to-toe with each other again, staving off a barrage of shots from their opposition throughout the evening. In all, Weiser made 35 stops in 65 minutes of action, while Saunders stopped 34 shots, including 16 in the second period alone, while both goalies allowed just one goal in the contest.
Post would have four power-play opportunities, including a 5-on-3 chance in the second, while Assumption had three chances, going 0-for-3 across the second and third periods. Junior forward Caroline Lilley would score the first goal of the evening just over halfway through the second period on a scrum in front of the net before flipping the puck over Saunders for the 1-0 advantage. Post would finally score for the first time in the waning moments of the third when sophomore defenseman
Caryss Kehl hit Currie with a pass in stride, and two whacks at the puck against Weiser would help it get by her to tie the game at one all and force overtime.
Continuing the trend of an evenly matched affair, neither side would break through in the extra five-minute, three-on-three session, which saw them both manufacture three shots on goal against the other. But the shootout would be a different story as both junior forwards
Celena Mickevicius and
Noa Farberman missed their attempts, while junior forward Kayla McGaffigan and sophomore forward Heather Ajakie both beat Saunders to steal the shootout win, 2-0.
