WATERBURY, Conn. – In a tale of two halves, Post University Men's Soccer did battle to a scoreless tie on Wednesday afternoon at LaMoy Field against Dominican (N.Y.), as both sides had a myriad of opportunities over the course of the final 20 minutes to break the seal on the match, but junior goalkeepers
Leopold Dufaut and David Arteaga came up with several big plays for the first tie between the two teams since the 2012 season, 0-0.
THE BASICS
#14 Post University 0, Dominican (N.Y.) 0
#14 Post University (3-0-4, 2-0-1 CACC)
Dominican (N.Y.) (1-5-3, 1-2-1 CACC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
All was quiet in the first half of action as both teams had just five shots apiece, with Arteaga making a save on the only shot attempt he faced on goal, while Dufaut's defense in front of him prevented him from having to face a single shot on goal. Offensively, Post held on a 2-1 edge on corner kicks with Dominican (N.Y.) proving to be the more aggressive team on the fouls front, committing six in 45 minutes en route to 16 fouls in the entire match after accounting for ten more in the second half.
After a quiet first 25 minutes of the second half, senior midfielder
Lucas Fernandes looked to beat Arteaga on a free kick with 20 minutes remaining, locating the ball just over the right corner of the net out of play. Senior forward Oscar Chazalet would provide the first real chance of the afternoon for the Chargers when a loose ball led to a two-on-one opportunity between Chazalet and sophomore midfielder Lorien Davies Carerra. Carrera's pass to Chazalet would leave him all alone with Dufaut, but the junior would get low and stop the high percentage chance with 10 1/2 minutes to go, which would end up being the only shot on goal of the match for Dominican (N.Y.).
The opportunities would continue to come inside of 10 minutes to go as graduate forward
Tiago Feler received a pair of touch passes leading to a one-on-one situation with Arteaga, but his sliding shot was pulled left of the goal mouth at the 6:30 mark, keeping it scoreless. Feler would have another attempt to give the Eagles the lead with 1:10 left when graduate midfielder
Sami Charaf Amal crossed a pass into the box, and the graduate student would head it out of reach of Arteaga, but off the crossbar and out of harm's way.
Moments before that, senior midfielder Henrique Zachello found space, lifting a ball to the left of Dufaut out of play, the last chance the Chargers would have to take the lead. Right before the buzzer sounded, junior forward
Aidan Tross lifted a ball in the direction of Arteaga, who harmlessly brought the ball down, ending the match in a 0-0 tie for the first time since 2010.
