ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – All it took was two hits on Thursday for the opposition as three-seeded Post University Baseball fell at the hands of sixth-seeded and in-conference opponent, Goldey-Beacom College in the first game of the NCAA Regionals hosted by Molloy University, 6-0, dropping them to the Loser's Bracket to face the University of New Haven tomorrow morning at 11:00 AM with their season on the line.
Senior infielder Darin Miller recorded three RBIs for the Lightning with his two-run home run in the first inning off junior right-hander
Brennan Holligan and then his RBI double in the seventh which was more than enough to lead the charge for Goldey-Beacom in the victory.
THE BASICS
#3 Post University 0, #6 Goldey-Beacom College 6
#3 Post University (28-20)
#6 Goldey-Beacom College (34-19)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Holligan would allow junior outfielder Christian Petrillo to reach safely on a single up the middle before retiring the next batter in junior infielder Braden Kolmansberger for the first out of the affair. Miller would take Holligan deep to dead center field, giving the Lightning a 2-0 lead before both sides would go into a stalemate.
Junior catcher
Jimmy Brennan would get a two-out hit off sophomore right-hander Nate Miller, putting two on after Nate Miller walked senior shortstop
Evan Cornwell before he came back to retire graduate outfielder
DJ Caron with a ground out. Neither team would manufacture any offense for their respective side as Holligan and Nate Miller dueled it out on the mound with only two runners reaching second base safely between the second and sixth innings.
With their best chance to get to Nate Miller, a one-out double from Brennan would bring Caron to the plate who fouled out for the second out of the frame. Following a walk issued to senior outfielder
Jaylen Kelley, Nate Miller would come back to strike out junior third baseman
Justin Rivera to escape the jam and keep the Lightning ahead by two.
Adding on some insurance would be Miller in the eighth inning after a one-out single to Petrillo as his two-out double scored the junior from first base to give Goldey-Beacom a 3-0 lead with six outs to go. Three more runs would come across the plate for the Lightning in the ninth inning off senior right-hander
Erik Gutowski off an RBI single by junior catcher Adam McEvoy and a two-run double from Petrillo before Nate Miller finished off the shutout with a scoreless bottom half of the ninth.
Getting his first career complete game shutout win, Nate Miller would go the distance allowing no runs on three hits with five strikeouts and three walks in the 6-0 win for Goldey-Beacom to move them forward in the Winner's Bracket to play two-seeded host Molloy University tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM.
