Baseball Bounced in Back-to-Back Games By Goldey-Beacom, Swept in Conference Doubleheader for First Time this Season

WATERBURY, Conn. – A late-stage comeback by Goldey-Beacom College in game one against Post University Baseball was all the momentum the Lightning needed heading into game two as the bats continued to roll for the visitors at Municipal Stadium on Sunday which saw the Eagles get swept in a conference doubleheader for the first time this season.

A four-run comeback in the final inning of game one gave Goldey-Beacom the 5-4 win while game two saw the Eagles jump out to a 3-1 lead before five unanswered runs and a five-run fifth paced the Lightning offense in game two for the 10-8 win.

THE BASICS

Post University 4, Goldey-Beacom College 5 (7 Innings)

Post University 8, Goldey-Beacom College 10 (7 Innings)

Post University (15-16, 7-3 CACC)

Goldey-Beacom College (20-11, 6-3 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 4, Goldey-Beacom College 5 (7 Innings)
Sophomore right-hander Nick Semon got the ball in game one and was given a 4-0 lead to work with in his start as junior catcher Jimmy Brennan plated one with his single in the first inning while junior first baseman Chris Corchado continued his hot week with an RBI double in the third which was followed by triple from graduate outfielder DJ Caron to make it a 4-0 game after three.

Nick Semon ended up lasting six innings while allowing just one run which came in the fifth on an RBI double from senior infielder Darin Miller, but otherwise, the sophomore was stellar. In his six innings, he would allow that lone run on four hits with seven strikeouts and five walks while throwing 103 pitches in his outing.

Turning to yesterday's game-one hero in freshman right-hander Jake Baumann, he would struggle after retiring the first batter as the next two runners reached base leading to a game-tying three-run home run by Miller. After walking sophomore outfielder Anthony Charles with two outs, junior left-hander Alexander Galvan would come in relief and walk the bases loaded leading to senior right-hander Marshall Thurman entering the game.

Thurman would hit the first batter he faced, leading to the go-ahead run in the ballgame. Senior right-hander Justin Jump, who started the game, would also finish it despite the rough start and retire Post 1-2-3 in the seventh to secure the 5-4 comeback win. Jump finished having gone all seven innings allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts, a walk, and a hit batter.

Game 2: Post University 8, Goldey-Beacom College 10 (7 Innings)
Once again, it was the Eagles in control early after sophomore right-hander Vincent Borghese allowed a run to score on a wild pitch. An RBI single from Caron followed by a two-run double by junior third baseman Justin Rivera gave Post a 3-1 lead after one which would be immediately met with a response from the Lightning.

An inside-the-park home run by junior outfielder Christian Petrillo with the bases loaded quickly flipped the script on the affair as a two-run lead for the Eagles turned into a two-run deficit in the blink of an eye. Petrillo would walk in the fifth against senior right-hander Erik Gutowski, getting back the run the Eagles had scored on a sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Michael Pavelchak, regaining their three-run edge and tacking on three more to with a three-run triple by junior infielder Braden Kolmansberger to seize control of the contest.

Post would answer with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning on three singles from Brennan, Pavelchak, and freshman catcher Brian Zweigbaum around an RBI ground out from Rivera to get back within two runs, but that would be as close as they got. The Eagles had their chances in the final two innings when they got first and second with two outs in the sixth but were thwarted as well as second and third with two outs in the seventh before Corchado grounded out, ending the game with a 10-8 loss for Post.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Chris Corchado closes a monster week for Post having finished 10-for-21 with three doubles, a home run, eight RBIs, six runs scored, and a walk
  • Darin Miller had a day for Goldey-Beacom, going 4-for-8 with a double, home run, four RBIs, a walk, and a run scored
  • Post University is now 10-4 on the season when they score the game's first run after scoring first in game one while falling to 5-12 when allowing the first run as they did in game two
  • In their last four head-to-head matchups, Post University is 1-3 against Goldey-Beacom College and 3-9 in their last 12 games dating back to the 2019 season

WHO'S NEXT
Post University will get a quick day off before returning right to action on Tuesday afternoon with a home game at Municipal Stadium against the University of Bridgeport slated for 3:00 PM. In the first year as CACC rivals, the Eagles swept the three-game series they played against the Purple Knights, allowing just two runs across those three affairs. Before that meeting, the two teams had not met since 2014 when they ended in a 9-9 tie.
