WATERBURY, Conn. – It is back to .500 for Post University Baseball as the Eagles used a seven-run fourth inning and six-run sixth inning to force the 10-run mercy rule at Municipal Stadium in the first of three games between them and the University of Bridgeport, 13-0, on Tuesday afternoon. The two teams will meet again for a doubleheader down in Bridgeport this Saturday starting at 12:00 PM.
THE BASICS
Post University 13, University of Bridgeport 0 (7 Innings)
Post University (16-16, 8-3 CACC)
University of Bridgeport (6-20, 4-4 CACC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
After being no-hit for the first three innings by sophomore right-hander James Ackerman, the Eagle bats would finally come to life in the fourth inning with junior first baseman
Chris Corchado leading off with a single. Two batters later with the bases loaded and still nobody out, junior third baseman
Justin Rivera would plate the first run of the day for Post with a sacrifice fly and then freshman outfielder
Dario Sosa's two-run single made it a 3-0 game a little while later with one out still.
Doubles by senior outfielder
Michael Pavelchak and senior shortstop
Evan Cornwell around a passed ball issued to senior catcher Jacob Rich capped off the big inning for Post who knocked out Ackerman after 3 2/3 innings having given up six runs (five earned) on four hits with two strikeouts, three walks, a wild pitch, and hit batter.
On the other side, freshman right-hander
Jack Martineau was dealing in his first start since March 22nd against Felician in his first career shutout performance. The North Haven, Connecticut native went all seven innings of the game while allowing just three hits, striking out eight batters, walking two, and hitting one in the win to move to 2-2 on the mound this season.
To force the mercy rule to go into effect, the Eagles struck for six more runs in the sixth as they loaded up the bases again for Corchado to knock home one with an RBI single followed by junior catcher
Jimmy Brennan being hit by a pitch and a three-run triple by graduate outfielder
DJ Caron to break the 10-run mark. Another sacrifice fly by Rivera finished the scoring for Post before Martineau cleaned up the Purple Knights in the seventh inning to get the Eagles back into the win column with a 13-0 rout of Bridgeport.
