Baumann Brings Home Game One, Brennan Sets Program Record for RBIs in Game Two in Baseball's Sweep of Dominican (N.Y.)

WATERBURY, Conn. – For Post University Baseball, things could not have gone better over the past 36 hours for them as they polished off their three-game series with a doubleheader sweep of Dominican (N.Y.) at Municipal Stadium with 4-3 and 12-2 wins over the Chargers. Entering a stretch in which they play five games in three days and six games in five days, the Eagles needed to use just five pitchers in that stretch which will leave them close to full strength for their doubleheader against Goldey-Beacom College tomorrow starting at 1:00 PM at Municipal Stadium.

THE BASICS

Post University 4, Dominican (N.Y.) 3 (7 Innings)

Post University 12, Dominican (N.Y.) 2 (7 Innings)

Post University (15-14, 7-1 CACC)

Dominican (N.Y.) (10-20, 5-5 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 4, Dominican (N.Y.) 3 (7 Innings)
Junior first baseman Chris Corchado got the scoring started for Post right away in the first inning with his two-run double that just got inside the foul line out in right field against junior right-hander Anthony Leak. However, that would be all the Eagles got despite loading the bases against the junior in the inning, and eventually that lead would evaporate in the second inning when junior infielder Ryan Bongiorno doubled home two runs to tie the game at two all.

After an RBI single from junior infielder Hunter Keller in the fourth gave Post the lead back, Corchado's third RBI of the day later on in the inning made it a 4-2 ballgame. Against junior right-hander Brennan Holligan, the Chargers loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the frame before freshman infielder David Knepper flew out to end the threat.

But Dominican (N.Y.) was not done as back-to-back hits with one out in the seventh inning knocked Holligan out of the game and brought n freshman right-hander Jake Baumann to try and get the final two outs. A shallow single by junior catcher Ty Gilligan loaded the bases for sophomore outfielder Davin Keddell-Tuckey whose fielder's choice advanced runners one base and made it a one-run game.

Facing freshman catcher Joseph Torres, Baumann got him to strike out looking and give Post their fourth straight win with a narrow 4-3 victory in game one.

Game 2: Post University 12, Dominican (N.Y.) 2 (7 Innings)
While game two started out in favor of Dominican (N.Y.) on an RBI ground out by Keddell-Tuckey, freshman catcher Brian Zweigbaum would reach on a fielder's choice in the second inning to tie the game up at one apiece. Yet again, Keddell-Tuckey gave the Chargers the lead back with his RBI fielder's choice before 11 unanswered runs by the Eagles gave them the doubleheader sweep.

Winning this one 12-2 in only seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule, junior catcher Jimmy Brennan's shallow fly ball to left was dropped by junior outfielder Tyler Richman to allow the tying run to score and kick off a three-run third inning for Post. Graduate outfielder DJ Caron followed up Brennan with a sacrifice fly and junior third baseman Justin Rivera knocked home another run to flip things back in the home team's favor, 4-2, after three.

More sloppy play from the Charger defense plated two more on a ground ball by junior shortstop Evan Cornwell, who had a sacrifice fly in the sixth of his own around a sacrifice fly in the fifth by Rivera. The big blow of the game came off the bat of Corchado who launched a home run to right field, bringing Post within one run of the mercy rule.

That game-winning run came off the bat of senior outfielder Michael Pavelchak who singled to right field and scored junior infielder Hunter Keller as freshman outfielder Jaden Maia threw to junior infielder Bryant Bassett at shortstop instead of home to try and create a play at the plate.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • With his RBI in game two, Jimmy Brennan surpassed Robert Olah as the all-time leader of the program for runs batted in at 115 RBIs – Brennan already holds the record for most runs scored in a career, passing Dan Luisi earlier in the season and sits at 124 runs scored after today
  • Scoring four times today, Michael Pavelchak now has 117 career runs scored which surpassed Dan Luisi's second-place mark of 115 runs scored
  • Post University is now 10-3 on the season when they score the game's first run after scoring first in game one while improving to 5-11 when allowing the first run as they did in game two
  • With the doubleheader sweep, Post University has now won eight straight games against Dominican (N.Y.) dating back to 2022 which is their longest head-to-head win streak in program history

WHO'S NEXT
Post University is right back at it to close out their busy weekend with a home doubleheader against Goldey-Beacom College slated to get underway from Municipal Stadium at 1:00 PM. The two teams will play a pair of seven-inning games and the Lightning enter this game receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll this past week. Last season, both sides captured two games each out of the four they faced each other in with Post staving off elimination from the CACC Tournament with a 10-5 victory over Goldey-Beacom last spring.
