Softball Held to One Run in Doubleheader Against New Haven, Get Swept on Wednesday Afternoon

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – It was a struggle on offense for Post University Softball as they headed down to New Haven for an in-state matchup with the University of New Haven in their second of three straight doubleheaders during the middle of the week. After a 9-1 mercy rule in five innings during game one, the Eagles would be unable to score in game two, getting swept by the Chargers with a 3-0 shutout loss.

THE BASICS

Post University 1, University of New Haven 9 (5 Innings)

Post University 0, University of New Haven 3

Post University (5-33)

University of New Haven (7-25)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 1, University of New Haven 9 (5 Innings)
Senior right-hander Jenny Riquelme got the start for Post in the first game, working out of some two-out trouble to keep things scoreless. But after allowing three runners to reach in a row with one out, the big hit of the inning came from Sophomore outfielder Bella Chenet with a bases-clearing triple that gave the Chargers a 3-0 lead before Riquleme escaped the frame without further damage being done.

Looking for a big half-inning themselves, the Eagles loaded up the bases for senior catcher Julianna Cicala in the third and her single would score one for Post before senior infielder Julia Maida went down swinging against freshman right-hander Breanna Kinney to end the threat. Following an inning with no offense, a two-out, two-run single by senior infielder Lauren Haversat started a sequence of six runs for New Haven as senior infielders Meg Anderson and Halle Frederick each singled home a run each around a two-run double sophomore infielder Kylie Thorpe, making it a 9-1 ball game.

Now in mercy rule territory with an eight-run lead in the fifth, the Chargers needed just three outs to get the win in game one which they would do with sophomore right-hander Marzia Johnson. After walking the lead-off hitter in Riquelme, Johnson would come back to get Cicala to ground into a fielder's choice and Maida to line into a double play, capping off the 9-1 win in five innings for New Haven.

Game 2: Post University 0, University of New Haven 3
A chance to take an early lead presented itself for the Eagles as they would get second and third with one out in the top of the first before sophomore right-hander Skylar Griffin came back to retire the next two batters and end the inning. Meanwhile, Chenet led off the bottom of the inning for the Chargers with a triple off of senior right-hander Maddison Caldwell and was driven home by sophomore outfielder Lucia Ceccarelli's RBI single to give New Haven a 1-0 lead after one.

Despite a solid outing from Caldwell in which she allowed just three runs on six hits with one strikeout, the offense for Post was stifled by Griffin who went seven shutout innings while allowing just five hits, striking out one, and walking three batters. She was aided by an RBI ground out in the second by freshman infielder Corina Wilton as well as a solo home run by Chenet to get her first win of the season, 3-0.

After that scoring chance in the first, the Eagles did have another opportunity with the bases loaded in the third with two outs, but Cicala flew out to end the inning. The next solid chance came in the top of the seventh with the tying run at the plate and the heart of the order up against Griffin, who ended up retiring graduate outfielder Samantha Riccardulli and senior shortstop Caitlin DeAngelis to secure the doubleheader sweep.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • With seven home runs still, Lily Tomasiello remains two home runs away from tying the single-season record set by Megan Pappas (2005) and Erica Ragazzone (2017) with nine home runs
  • Caitlin DeAngelis remains at 17 career home runs keeping her one behind Megan Pappas (18) for third-most in program history and two behind Kayla Kresley (19) for second-most
  • Post University falls to 2-27 when allowing the first run of the game this season – the Eagles are 3-6 when scoring first in a game
  • With the shutout loss in game two, Post University has been shut out 13 times this season, setting the program record for single-season shutout losses, surpassing the 2013 team who had 12 shutout losses
