Softball Allows 27 Combined Runs to Saint Rose, Swept in Home Doubleheader on Thursday

WATERBURY, Conn. – As senior infielder Lily Tomasiello continues to make a run at history for Post University Softball, looking to break the single-season record for most home runs which currently sits at nine, the Eagles were looking to close the season strong. Already eliminated from CACC Tournament contention, their season will end next Wednesday against Dominican (N.Y.), but with eight games left entering the day, the opportunity to pick up some momentum heading into 2025 is still plausible.

While Tomasiello bombed her eighth home run of the season, bringing her within one of tying the record, the Eagles would struggle against the Golden Knights, falling 10-2 in game one before allowing 12 unanswered runs in game two and losing 17-8 in eight innings, resulting in a doubleheader sweep.

THE BASICS

Post University 2, College of Saint Rose 10

Post University 8, College of Saint Rose 17 (6 Innings)

Post University (5-35)

College of Saint Rose (18-12)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 2, College of Saint Rose 10
Three hitters for Saint Rose recorded three-hit days with senior infielder Alexandra Deeter leading the charge having two doubles, a single, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Two of the three hits for freshman outfielder Kelsey Higgins were also doubles and she scored three times as well while freshman infielder Marin Frazee was 3-for-3 with three singles, three runs scored, two RBIs, and a walk.

Junior outfielder Mattison Muller got the scoring started for the Golden Knights in the second with her big two-run single as part of a 2-for-4 day with three RBIs. Muller's third RBI came during the third in which four runs came across home plate for Saint Rose courtesy of the junior along with Frazee and Deeter.

Frazee rounded out the 7-0 start for Saint Rose in the fourth with her RBI single before Tomasiello launched her eighth home run of the season, placing her one back of tying the single-season record entering game two. The Golden Knights answered back with three runs of their own on a double by sophomore infielder Maddy Bland in the sixth and a two-run home run in the seventh by Deeter to cap off the 10-2 win.

Graduate right-hander Adian Sheeran picked up the win for Saint Rose allowing two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Dropping her 11th decision of the season, senior right-hander Maddison Caldwell allowed 10 runs (eight earned) on 13 hits with a season-high four strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Post University 8, College of Saint Rose 17 (6 Innings)
A 4-for-5 game two for junior catcher Ellen Fuda saw her hit two doubles, a two-run home run, and a single leading to five RBIs and five runs scored while Deeter kept up her impressive doubleheader performance for Saint Rose with a 2-for-4 game which included four RBIs courtesy of a grand slam and a run scored.

The top of the Golden Knights lineup was scorching hot after being held in check during game one, combining to go 9-for14 with two home runs, three doubles, and 10 total RBIs in what would ultimately be a 17-8 victory in six innings.

Post had taken a 5-2 lead in the first behind a pair of singles by senior third baseman Jenny Riquelme and senior infielder Julia Maida as well as a throwing error but were immediately met with three runs in the second by Fuda and Higgins. Despite an RBI double from Tomasiello and a pair of ground outs that helped the Eagles regain a three-run edge, 8-5, things would unravel from there.

12 unanswered runs for Saint Rose, highlighted by a nine-run sixth inning with the game tied at eight, gave them full control in what would end up being a shortened game due to the eight-run mercy rule. In that inning, the Golden Knights scored those nine runs on five hits with the help of three errors by Post.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • With her home run in game one, Lily Tomasiello sits at eight home runs this season, bringing her one home run away from tying the single-season record set by Megan Pappas (2005) and Erica Ragazzone (2017) with nine home runs
  • Caitlin DeAngelis remains at 17 career home runs keeping her one behind Megan Pappas (18) for third-most in program history and two behind Kayla Kresley (19) for second-most
  • Post University falls to 2-29 when allowing the first run of the game this season – the Eagles are 3-6 when scoring first in a game
  • Allowing 27 runs between the two games of the doubleheader, that is the most runs allowed by Post University over a two-game stretch this season

WHO'S NEXT
Post University plays four straight games on the road before returning home for their season finale, starting off with a conference doubleheader against Wilmington University which is currently ranked 21st nationally in the National Fast Pitch Association poll. The Eagles are 2-8 in their last 10 games against the Wildcats, getting swept last year 4-0 and 5-2 at home after splitting the doubleheader on the road the previous year.
