16-Hit Explosion, Magnificent Start by Martineau Pace Baseball to 7-1 Win Over Caldwell

WATERBURY, Conn. – Getting their game in ahead of the rainstorm rolling into Municipal Stadium this evening, the only storm in the early afternoon was Post University Baseball on the offensive side of the ball. In a game where three players recorded three-plus hits, including a 4-for-5 day for junior first baseman Chris Corchado, and 16 total hits for the Eagles, Post got back into the win column with a decisive 7-1 home win over Caldwell University to kick off their three games this week against the Cougars.

THE BASICS

Post University 7, Caldwell University 1

Post University (19-18, 11-5 CACC)

Caldwell University (8-18, 7-9 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
A pair of sacrifice flies in the first two innings would help the Eagles get on the scoreboard first and take a two-run lead over the Cougars. Senior shortstop Evan Cornwell had a bunt single to help spur the first run of the game in the first inning and eventually came around to score on graduate outfielder DJ Caron's fly out to right. A leadoff single in the second for junior infielder Hunter Keller ended up getting him to third following a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch by sophomore right-hander Alfonso Esposito.

Keller would score when senior outfielder Michael Pavelchak lifted a ball into left, scoring him on the sacrifice fly before Esposito got out of the inning. Scoring for the third straight inning to start the game, senior outfielder Jaylen Kelley plated two with his RBI single to center before Caldwell finally got themselves on the scoreboard in the fourth.

Against freshman right-hander Jack Martineau, a one-out walk followed by back-to-back singles from junior utility player Liam Lombardi and sophomore infielder Michael Cruz cut into the Post lead, 4-1. But they would quickly get that run back in the bottom of the frame with a one-out single from Corchado after senior outfielder Zach Saunders bobbled the ball, allowing the run to come around and score.

Continuing to add to the lead for the Eagles was junior third baseman Justin Rivera with his two-run single in the sixth as Post continued to pull away, 7-1, with three innings to play. That would be it for the scoring on both sides, allowing the Eagles to snap their two-game losing streak with a 7-1 win at home, improving to 11-5 in conference play.

In the victory, Martineau had another quality start after going seven innings while allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts, two walks, and a hit batter. The freshman improved to 3-2 this season and has now allowed one run or less in each of his last two starts.
