Strong Pitching, Offensive Firepower Lead Baseball to Sweep of Caldwell University

CALDWELL, N.J. – 26 runs scattered across the three-game set for Post University Baseball was more than enough for them to earn a three-game sweep of Caldwell University this week. Coming off a 7-1 win on Wednesday at home, the Eagles continued their offensive display on Saturday coupled with a pair of strong pitching performances to sweep the Cougars, 9-0 and 10-3, moving to 16-5 overall in the conference.

Post University 10, Caldwell University 3

Post University (21-18, 13-5 CACC)

Caldwell University (8-20, 7-11 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 9, Caldwell University 0

Manufacturing the team's sixth shutout win of the season, graduate right-hander Joe Christiana threw his third complete game, but the first shutout of the year. In his nine innings of work, Christiana threw just 103 pitches while allowing only three hits, striking out nine hitters, and hitting one batter in his fifth win as a starter.

Senior outfielder Michael Pavelchak got the Eagles on the board in the third inning with his RBI single to score junior infielder Hunter Keller to put Post up by one in the early going. A five-run explosion in the fifth helped the visitors take firm control of the affair as junior first baseman Chris Corchado and junior catcher Jimmy Brennan each singled home a run followed by a fielder's choice for junior third baseman Justin Rivera.

Capping off the inning was senior outfielder Jaylen Kelley with his two-run single as Post left the frame with a 6-0 advantage. The first home run of the season for senior outfielder Danny Gill in the sixth followed by a pair of sacrifice flies in the seventh and eighth by Pavelchak and Rivera added three more runs to the Eagles' offensive totals as they took a 9-0 shutout win in game one over the Cougars.

Game 2: Post University 10, Caldwell University 3 (7 Innings)

In what has turned into quite the hot stretch for Jaylen Kelley, the senior tallied his second home run of the season in the second inning of game two, a two-run home run that got the Eagles on the board first, 2-0. After that, Post would plate two more runs off the bat of senior shortstop Evan Cornwell's sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Corchado to take a 4-0 lead.

It was all Brennan in the fourth inning to help Post tack on three more runs as his two-run triple made it a six-run lead before scoring on a wild pitch against junior right-hander Brandon Scalisi, making it a 7-0 advantage for the Eagles. The fifth would yield more offense in which a Cornwell double and an infield single from Brennan gave Post a nine-run lead at that point in the game.

Breaking a streak of 19 straight innings without a run against the Eagles, junior utility player Liam Lombardi lofted a sacrifice fly to score a run for the Cougars before sophomore right-hander Nick Semon continued his dominant start. Getting his second straight win as a starter, Semon tied his career-high 11 strikeouts which he set last game, after going six innings allowing one run on three hits and three walks.

Senior right-hander Erik Gutowski would allow two runs in the seventh inning on a home run to senior first baseman Oscar Fajardo, before retiring the side and clinching the doubleheader sweep for Post with the 10-3 win.
