Tomasiello Hits Seventh Home Run of the Season, Softball Swept By Georgian Court on the Road

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Getting outscored 25-1 across 10 innings against Georgian Court University in their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, Post University Softball was swept for the 11th time this season in a pair of five-inning losses against the Lions, 10-1 in game one and 15-2 in game two which saw senior infielder Lily Tomasiello record her seventh home run of the year. Tomasiello is now two home runs away from tying the program record for most home runs in a single season.

THE BASICS

Post University 1, Georgian Court University 10 (5 Innings)

Post University 2, Georgian Court University 15 (5 Innings)

Post University (5-29, 2-16 CACC)

Georgian Court University (15-17, 7-5 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 1, Georgian Court University 10 (5 Innings)
Freshman left-hander Devin Barnett would struggle in her start against the Lions, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 13 hits across just four innings of work while walking two batters. It was the most runs Barnett had allowed in a start this season and came after she dominated against Chestnut Hill College three days ago to pick up her first collegiate victory with the Eagles.

The Lions would score the first seven runs of the game, including three in the first on a triple by senior catcher Adriana Mungo, a double from senior first baseman Kaitlyn Stufft, and a single by junior infielder Brittany Gable who got a run home on her bunt after a throwing error by Tomasiello at first. A second-inning double steal and RBI doubles from both Stufft and senior outfielder Jadalynn Rodriguez plated four more runs for Georgian Court who took a commanding 7-0 lead.

Freshman utility player Allysa Calabrese plated the lone run of the game for the Eagles in the fourth inning with her RBI single which scored senior infielder Julia Maida before a two-run home run by Stufft in the bottom of the inning put the game back in mercy rule territory with a lead of eight runs or more after five innings.

Sophomore right-hander Janelle Blaszka worked around a two-out single by senior right-hander Jenny Riquelme to shut the door on the 10-1 win for Georgian Court in five innings. Blaszka finished with a complete game in which she allowed one run (unearned) on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Post University 2, Georgian Court University 15 (5 Innings)
Like with game one, Georgian Court would go on the offensive right out of the gate after escaping runners on the corners for Post with only one out in the top of the first inning. Putting up a four-spot against junior right-hander Alyssa Hughes, an error at third by Riquelme with Stufft up scored two while RBI singles from freshman utility player Gabriella Aleman and freshman catcher Isabella Molina gave the Lions a commanding lead.

Facing freshman right-hander Julia Lapp, the Eagles had first and second with two outs in the second, but would be unable to cash in on the opportunity with Lapp retiring graduate outfielder Samantha Riccardulli with a ground out back to her to end the inning. With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the frame, the Lions pushed across three more on a two-run single by Aleman and a sacrifice fly by Molina, extending their lead to 7-0.

With the first two runners reaching in the third for Georgian Court, Hughes would be lifted for senior right-hander Maddison Caldwell who allowed an RBI single to Mungo and a three-run home run to Stufft, as the Lions continued to add onto their lead, 11-0, heading into the fourth where Georgian Court plated four more runs on a two-RBI single for freshman infielder Cheyenne Jackson and fielding error by junior infielder Brooke Dickenson.

Tomasiello would help the Eagles avoid their 12th shutout of the season with her two-run home run in the fifth inning, but it would not be enough to extend the game another inning as Post was swept by Georgian Court for the fifth time in six years, 15-2, in five innings.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • After her home run in the second game, Lily Tomasiello now has seven home runs on the year and is just two away from tying the single-season record set by Megan Pappas (2005) and Erica Ragazzone (2017) with nine home runs
  • Post University falls to 2-23 when allowing the first run of the game this season – the Eagles are 3-6 when scoring first in a game
  • This is the 11th time this season in which Post University has been swept by their opponent in a doubleheader
  • Since 2018, Post University is now 1-13 in their 14 games against Georgian Court University and has not beaten them on the road since the 2016 season in a 3-0 victory in game two of that doubleheader
WHO'S NEXT
Post University gets ready for a trio of non-conference doubleheaders during the middle of next week starting with a rematch of Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 PM up in Rindge, New Hampshire. When the two teams met to start the 2024 season at LaMoy Field, the Eagles dropped game one, 17-5, and fell in game two by a 7-0 score in five innings before the game was called due to darkness.
