MELBOURNE, Fla. – In the second game of the day for Post University Softball, the Eagles squared off against West Chester University for the first time since 2022 in hopes of continuing to get the offense rolling like they had in the past three games entering play. But for the third time in the last week, Post would be no-hit by the opposition in a five-inning shutout, 8-0, that lasted just one hour and saw only one baserunner reach base for the Eagles via error.
THE BASICS
Post University 0, West Chester University 8 (5 Innings)
Post University (1-7)
West Chester University (9-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior right-hander
Maddison Caldwell got the ball for this game and the Golden Rams would jump on her for three runs in the first inning. Graduate utility player Grace Aguilar got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly before an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Mairead Hopkins and RBI double fifth-year infielder Alexa Paterson capped the West Chester lead at 3-0 after one.
Errors by the Post University defense would aid in allowing the offense of the Golden Rams to plate some runs throughout as graduate outfielder Madison Melvin's stolen base, which was one of four on the afternoon, resulted in a throwing error in the second that allowed her to score. Then errors in the third and fourth innings by the Eagles led to the rest of West Chester's runs except for an infielder single by Aguilar.
In all, Post's defense had five errors in the game by four different players which led to Caldwell's final line across her four innings of work being eight runs (four earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts, a walk, and a hit batter. The only blemish of the day on sophomore right-hander Danielle Ciliberto's resume would not even be her fault as an error committed by sophomore infielder Lauryn Kane to start the game would end up being the only extra batter she faced.
The rest of the way, Ciliberto faced just 15 Post batters which were all retired in order and forced 11 ground outs as well as four fly outs. The sophomore did not record a strikeout or a walk in the 8-0 win for West Chester.
