Softball Slowed Down and Swept by #4 University of Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. – Against the number four team in Division II, Post University Softball showcased their ability to hang with one of the best teams in the nation this season at times. But a combined seven errors across the doubleheader and offensive struggles against the University of Tampa pitching staff would result in the Eagles being swept on Wednesday, 8-0 in five innings for game one and 5-0 in game two.

THE BASICS

Post University 0, #4 University of Tampa 8 (5 Innings)

Post University 0, #4 University of Tampa 5

Post University (1-9)

#4 University of Tampa (20-4)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 0, #4 University of Tampa 8 (5 Innings)
For the second consecutive game, the Eagles would commit five errors which helped to extend innings for the Spartans against senior right-hander Jenny Riquelme, who started game one, and freshman left-hander Devin Barnett who came in relief of Riquelme. A one-out error at third by senior infielder Lily Tomasiello helped Tampa plate their first run in the first on an RBI double from freshman infielder Kinnah Kreidler which was followed up with an RBI single from senior second baseman Camryn Wineinger.

Wineinger would scratch across Kreidler for the third run of the day in the third inning on an RBI triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Mariah Galhouse, making it 4-0. Kreidler finished the game 3-for-3 with that first-inning RBI and two runs scored while the Spartans had four players finish with multi-hit games.

The Post bats would be unable to do anything against senior right-hander Mary Beth Feldman, who went the full five innings of the eight-run mercy rule allowing just two hits and striking out 12 Eagle hitters. In the fifth, Tampa struck for four runs to end the game with an 8-0 win via an RBI single and error by junior third baseman Alexa Russo, an RBI triple from senior infielder Stephanie Balmer, and a sacrifice line out by junior outfielder Lauren Fantone against Barnett who relieved Riquelme for the final 1 1/3 innings played.

Game 2: Post University 0, #4 University of Tampa 5
Both teams would go scoreless through two innings of play as junior right-hander Alyssa Hughes and sophomore right-hander Gwen McGinnis dueled it out. But a pair of errors would be the undoing for Post on defense as Balmer reached on an infield single to Hughes and ended up on third after a throwing error by the junior with one out.

Balmer would go on to score with Fantone at the dish when senior second baseman Maddison Caldwell committed an error and a two-out double from Kreidler gave the Spartans their 2-0 lead. Three straight singles in the fourth along with two sacrifice flies from junior utility player Abigail Siegel to extend their lead to four.

Despite the 5-0 loss, Hughes would have a solid start against number four in the nation, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits with only a walk. But McGinnis would hold Post in check, no hitting the Eagles in the seven-inning game while striking out 11, falling just a walk short of a perfect game which was issued to Caldwell in the second inning.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • University of Tampa pitching accounted for 23 strikeouts in the doubleheader while walking just one batter across the 12 innings played

  • This is the fourth time this season in which Post University has been no-hit, but the first time it has come in seven innings – This is the most in recorded program history for a single season as the Eagles were no-hit in both games of their doubleheader against Eckerd College on Saturday and yesterday against West Chester in addition to game two today
