Evan Cornwell Hits First Home Run of the Season, Five Unanswered Runs for Barry Down Baseball in Florida

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Freshman right-hander Jack Martineau made his second straight start on the mound for Post University Baseball in the three-game series finale for the Eagles against Barry University on Sunday night down in Florida, but five unanswered runs by the Buccaneers would be the undoing for the Eagles as they were swept out of Miami Shores with the 5-2 defeat.

THE BASICS

Post University 2, Barry University 5

Post University (6-10)

Barry University (12-11)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Martineau had his longest and most dominant outing of the spring thus far in the short time he has been a collegiate pitcher, shutting down a Barry offense that had a combined 29 runs in two games just a day ago. Martineau pitched a season-high six innings while allowing just one run on two hits, striking out and walking three batters, and hitting a pair of hitters as well.

This was the freshman's second straight start of the season and with his performance, he has now allowed only one run in each of his first two starts and one run or fewer in four of his five appearances. But opposing him was freshman right-hander Aiden Denton who was just as dominant in his start on the bump. Denton needed just 98 pitches to throw a complete game in which he allowed two runs on four hits with a strike out and walk.

Those two runs would come in the fourth inning to give Post the lead when senior outfielder Michael Pavelchak singled and senior shortstop Evan Cornwell drove him in with his first home run of the season to give Post a 2-0 lead. The lone run Martineau would give up also came in the fourth with runners on second and third when junior catcher Matthew Menendez's sacrifice fly drove in a run to cut the Barry deficit in half before the bats went silent for both sides.

That would be until the eighth inning when the Buccaneers finished off their stretch of five unanswered runs to snatch away the series sweep. Graduate right-hander Nathaniel Byrd allowed three straight hits, including a game-tying double to junior outfielder Nick Toms before being lifted for junior right-hander Brennan Holligan. Junior infielder Felix Diaz would get the go-ahead single off of Holligan while junior catcher Steven Nitch's sacrifice fly and another RBI single from junior infielder Jimmy Bruno closed the scoring for Barry.

Denton would work around a two-out walk, his first and only walk issued of the game, to retire Post in the ninth inning to cap off his complete game and give the Buccaneers the three-game series sweep by downing the Eagles, 5-2.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Michael Pavelchak has now gotten on base in 25 straight games -- Pavelchak went 1-for-4 with a single and a run scored and the one hit added his name to the 150 Hit Club, becoming the sixth player in program history to reach the mark
  • In 16 1/3 innings to start his collegiate career, Jack Martineau has allowed just five runs in five appearances while allowing one run or fewer in four of them – Martineau also holds a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 12-4
  • Post University is 4-2 this season when scoring the game's first run while holding a 2-8 mark when allowing the opponent to score first
  • In the all-time series, Post University is still searching for its first win against Barry University, now holding an 0-4 record against the Buccaneers while being outscored 57-13

WHO'S NEXT
Post University has a day off before they take on the University of New Haven for the second time this spring in the penultimate game of their spring trip on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 PM. The game will take place in Lake Worth, Florida at Santaluces High School. The Eagles beat the Chargers in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina just a couple of weeks ago, 9-4, snapping a six-game losing skid in the overall series.
