SHELTON, Conn. -- Another close, competitive matchup for Post University Women's Ice Hockey against Long Island University (LIU) on the back-end of a home-and-home series between the two squads saw a similar finish to less than 24 hours ago. Once again lead 2-1 in the third period, the Eagles would not be able to shut the door on the Sharks, going into overtime and a eventually a three-round shootout which they would fall in, 1-0.
THE BASICS
Post University 2, LIU 2 (1-0 Loss in Shootout)
Post University (3-11-2, 3-7-2 NEWHA)
LIU (8-5-2, 8-2-2 NEWHA)
HOW IT HAPPENED
As it was a day ago, Post struck first with sophomore forward
Celena Mickevicius beating sophomore goalie Clara Kammholz with a shot right in front of the net. It was the second goal of the season for Mickevicius as freshman forward
Rowyn Ringor fed senior forward
Julia Wysocki behind the net who threw the puck in front to the sophomore for the goal which would keep Post ahead heading into the second period where LIU struck back to tie the game at one all.
With just over five minutes gone by in the second frame, a blocked shot by the Eagles found the stick of freshman defenseman Kristen Kiggen on the right side of the circle who shifted down near the red line and threw the puck in front from junior forward Ryan Kearns to beat junior goalie
Hannah Saunders with the game-tying goal. Reclaiming their one-goal lead would be Post in the third as Ringor flew into the zone with just under seven minutes gone by and a shot from sophomore forward
Macy Peterson took a hop over to sophomore forward
Noa Farberman's stick in front of Kammholz. Making the most of her opportunity, Farberman lifted the puck over the top of the sophomore for the score and the go-ahead goal at the time.
However less than three minutes later, back came the Sharks as graduate forward Carrigan Umpherville and freshman forward Drew Dyczkowski helped sophomore defenseman Ella Knewtson scored from near the left circle. The shot from Knewtson found its way around a myriad of Post and LIU bodies that screened Saunders from seeing the puck, allowing the Sharks to pull even at two and force overtime for the second straight day.
After neither side would concede a goal, both Saunders and Kammholz would be near-perfect in the shootout, but one goal would make all the difference to send LIU to the victory. Peterson, Farberman, and Wysocki would all be stopped by Kammholz while senior forward Jeannie Wallner was denied by Saunders before senior defenseman Bri Eid's move to the left of the goal would get by the junior netminder and prove the difference maker in the 2-2 tie that went the way of the Sharks by virtue of the 1-0 shootout win.
